Scott Liaurie Whitbysa growth îs continuing with January showing a- hig g number, of building permits' issued as compared to the same, period last year. Permits valued at over $32.8. million were issued in January as coxnpared te, the $6. 1-millign issuèd last year in thé samne periôd. Mayor Bob Attersle said that he was very surprised about the outcome. "It's an unbelievable start for the year and there's a lot more coming tlïrough in February,» he adds. Over 68-per# cent of the $32.8- million collected is from residein- tial permits which are showing no signs of sIowing up, with 130 perrüuts for single famîily dwvel- lings issued. In January last year, there were only 46 permits issued. Permits were .issued for more than $5.4-million worth of com- mercial construction'in the past month as compared te, only $229,500 in January last year. Attersley stated that the bulk of the permit value for commercial cornes from the Journey's End Motel permit. The other big change involves institutioýnal permits- which were valued at more $4.8-million, as compared to zero for last Janu- ary. Attersley said that the high value, is due te the permitfor the recreation complex te be con- structed beside the municipal building on Rossland Rd. Commenting on the -report as a whole, Attersley said, uIt's' an' overall improvement in assess- ment and a saving te the people in the commiit. Lawn bowling may -be reloceated to alow. centre expansion By Scott Laurie The lawn bowl green now on Brock St. S. may be relocated te Bradley Park te permit expan- sion of the Whitby Seniors' Acti- lÎ'H.E. International, a con- sulting firm, hired te consider building expansion alternatives, reomeded expansion te the south of the existing facility and onte the, adjoining bowling green property. According te the report, this alternative was chosen because it provides for continued use of the existing building, is economical, permits consideration of further expansion, and allows for expan- ded parking. Regular fixed routes will end at the end of -peaàk service'and one bus will meet each trainas it arrives up lx> 1:04 a.m., Monday te Saturdiay. Passengers willb rped off at the Whitby Transit stop nearest their destination. Councillor Joe Drumm thought the idea was «absolute non- sense.» He objected te the idea because hie didn-t like the thought of Whitby Tansit used as what hie cale a «a taxi service.» "We can't be saving money if we're driving an eîmpt bus te helI and back!» said Drumm. Councillor Marcel Brunelle stated that transit services do not make money as'a rule and it was time te try something else. «I think this is a desirable thing-, the present system is a waste of money,» hie added. Councillor Joe Bugelli pointed out that the current systemi is costing about $160,000 a year whereas the new system will cost $65.000 per year. An additional $15,000 is. allotted for extra ser- vice durting special events ( exhi- bition, sporting events in Toronte, etc.), which brings the total cost te $80,000. Councillor Tom Edwards felt that it was time te tr;.r a new method but that service should be provide* for the whole com- munity, and not just GO riders. It's going te cost us no matter wbich way we go,» hie added. a à 9 BEST SELLING IMPORT TRUC
