'P.,rettiest street i Ontarno tirne tunnel to the 1 8O's By Trudie Zavadovios 'The Prettiest Street in Ontario,' the pro e develop- ment by Cullen Gardens, 13is eU ini the planning stâwes. By the time it is finshed it will be a historie stroll down memory lane to the mid-1800s. .When completed, the develop- ment project will be a street of 25 heritage homes and a 45-suite hotel complete with conferenoe and recreation rooms. Although the property, desig- nated a touriet activity area, and the proposed development fal within the guidelines of the Region's officiai plan, Whitby's officiai plIan does not alow for a hotel of that size, so it is now going through an aniendment procese. Whitby council recom- mended approval of the project at their J an. 15 meeting. The development plan a plicto goes before regional council March 7. The hotel would adjoin a row of heritage homes that will stretch east of Cochrane St., north of Taunton Md Another row of heritage homes will be located south of the development. The fret phase of the project, the herit&ige houses, are schedu- led te be'ready by early summer, 1992. There are a total of five houses on the site so far. One house is already on a foundation, two are sitting onsteel, and two stone houses aresitting on skdds. According te project manager Owen Hace,it cost between $50,000 te $100,00 te transport each heritage home te the site, depending on size, weight, height and location of the house. They then have to be restored and decorated. They are looking for heritage homes that are doniated because the cost of transpor- tation and restoration is s0 high. «We are trying to do something unique, to pireserve some of our heritage that is quickly dis- appearing under the wrecker's bil" B aya Hachey H'e says the first floor of the houses will be for commercial use while the second floors will be designed for bed and breakfast rooms. The project, which Cullen hopes to complete b 1997, is bng funded entfrely through private resouroes. The frest two phases of the project are expec- ed to cost between $7-million and $8-million. "It's a risk and a gamble,» says Hachey. "We have -confidence that the people wil ike it. Walk- mng down the street . e just like walking back in time." The projeet bas been a- year and a half in the plannin stages ,and has been puruied or ,ae past year. The renderings are soon expec- ted to be completed.
