WMM[.BMFR RESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4,*1990, PAGE 27 WHITB3Y FREE PRESS5 REAL ESTATE-SECTION f*èneuilders-' ascation pêresident in Oshaw Lobbyi.ng, urged,;to :'help control grwth Municipalities need to actively lobby QueenWs Park for assis- tance in managing growth Johni Mansfield, president'oJ the Ontario Home Builders' Associa- tion, said in Oshawa last week.*' Future . growth in Oshawa-Durham can have either positve or negative effects, depending on the willingness of Queen's Park ta share in the development of necessary infrastructure, he said. Mansfield said that growth is expected ta slow down in the 1990s, but not by much. With the population continuing ta increase by roughly 70,000 people a. year, he said the governmenit should have. a plan for where these peojple are going ta live and work. "But none of this planning is happening," he said. Claiming that "municipalities are lurching from- one growth-related crisis to another," Mansfield pointed ta the transportation links that Oshawa will need within the next couple of years. Hie listed several cities tht need major- growth related structure items such as water, pipelines, sewage treatnxent plants, and improved transportation services._ In the past, the provincial government has paid for these 'bard" services. Blut increasing emphasis on "o&" services such' as, health care and social assistance bas pushed the financing of infrastructure ta the backburner, he said. Mansfield said that the provision cf rmads, sewers and supply of water is a long-term investment mi the future of Ontario. Hte said that Ontario's quality of life and economic competitiveness depend on these investinents.
