High school students wha are ta attend Father Leo J. This tîme around, however, the board is way ahead ln maklng preparations for the worst should the new hlgh sohool flot be ready ta apen ln September, due to possible trade strikes. Plans had already -been made ta lacate students, and theme are many of them,,bath at the elementary and secondary school level, affected by the delay ln schaool construction. Re: Trafflo hazard at AndersoS - BradleyfFredoriclir St. intermecion I amn compeiled to add my voice to the growing tlirong of concerned citizens who have previously expressed their fears on the increasing dangers on the streets surrounding Our neighborhood.1 lI the March 28 edition of The Free Press, Mr. Robinson remarked on the added threat of To the editor At bis monthly Vox Pox (Vice of the People) forum at the Whitby Public Library on March 30, NP Rene Soetens exploded in a rage and said that veterans in a local nursing home are "so wel looked after that they are banldng some of their allowances for their heirs." This uncharacteristic outburst was the result' of my questions te - him regardng the recently announced chages te the veterans programn te make them pay more for their board. I do not believe that Mr. Soetens would deliberately insult any of bis electors, let alone. our veterans, some of whom are in rows of graves after liberating the' country of bis place of birth. I believe that bis remarks were the result of my persistent question of why the Conservative party does noy see the need for a ledersbip review - in light of the fact that bis party bas sunk te, a record low in popularity of 17 per cent. is curt reply te, the question was "li; not needed!' As I arn sure most are aware, Mr. Soetens is a member of the Finance Comrmittee that toured the country to gage the public the daily convoy of dump truckcs careening at wiil up and down Anderson St. We are caught, once again, -in the midst of the latest frenzy of residential land development. The cacophany of noise, dirt and physical danger greet us daily as we jockey for position on 'Dur "Indianapolis" of Whitby East. The logical outcome of ail of this frantic activity, however, is that sometime late this year, we wil be greeted by the prospect of even greater road congestion, as the newly built "executive" homes response te the GBT tax. Recently published poils demonstrate an overwhelming opposition against the tax. Regardless of these findings, Mr. Soetens steadfastl maintains he finds no suce opposition. He chooses te ignore the wishes of the multitude, and instead speaks; te a minority of the converted, i.e., breakfast of local businessmen, meetin gs Of the Board of Trade, Chambers of Commerce, etc., al of ttiem converts te the tex because they wifl receive a generous rebate Fer collecting it. I would like te, point out. that it is flot an oversight of the FInance Committee that they held no hearings in Quebec - it was calculated and deliberate. It is another shocking example of the political trickery of the leader of the governing party. One tbing bas become vewy obvious since the last federal election - that -the governrnent has not done those things wbich they said they would do, but has done those tbings wbich they said they would not do. Jüm McLà ean Ajax Retired Veteran fil with occupants at the rate of two cars per household. I would like te ask the politicians of Whitby one very simple question. Where will the access roads leading in and out of the new subdivision be? I fear I already know the answer. The sterets will link up directly with Brad St. via.Boychyn Dr. (now a end street). What then? There wiil be more chaos and more congestion, te the point of saturation and complete breakdown of order. When that happens, perhaps someone wiil do something. Thée "bandaid" approach has already been implemented. We have police cars stationed at the corners 'of Maplewood Dr. te the north,- and Frederick St. (already the site of several multi-vebicle pile-ups), usually after an incident. Occasionally, we have radar patrols. The effects are always temporary. The only solution is one that is permanent enough te allow the safe flow of traffic at this intersection. P arn speaking of traffie signals. Not only would they serve te slow the trafflc te the posted speed limit of 50 km/h, but they would also provide needed safe, passage for pede.st*ians obliged te cross four lanes of traffic te reach the two schools (Anderson CVI, and Pringle Creek public school) located on the west side of the street. We need traffic lights, and we need them now, before a fiatality There are -37 new homes already constructed immediately te the rear of my property.
