WH1TBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY# MAY 16,1990, PAGE il Lamprey program kilts other fish By MikeKowalold About 200 fish were accidently killed in Lynde Creek recently from toicants used to control laznprey eels. Larry Schleen, field projects supervisor of the federal govern. ment's Fisheries and Oceans' sea lampjrlecontrol centre, confir- medthefiureinan interview. Schleen said about 200 white suckerflsh were killed as a resuit of "lampricide» being put into the creek. Schleen said Dufins Creek in Ajax and Oshawa Creek are also eing treated as part of the sea lamprey -management lprcgram, but Lynde was the anly creekÏ that caused problems. «'Only an Lynde did we exjperience any fish mortality. We estimated a couple hundred in the area around (Hwy) 401,»- said Schleen. Sea laznprey eels, are parasites which attack fish. Tlhe lamprey has been blamed for *irtually destroying the commerial fish- inglndustry on the Great Lakes. Evans Ct. resident Judy Hoo- per told The Free Press she noticed a work crew dumpingt something into the creek lait week. Upon investigating she dis- covered that a numnber cf "pick- erel, mudcat and trout7 were having difficulty breathing. Many of the fish died. Hoaper called the Ontario Ministry cf Environment hotline and was told that wbat she witnessed were federal govern- ment officiais treating the water. Ufl just dosen't seem ta, be the smart thing to do, it killed the flsh. Wre rather upset about it," said Hooper. Schleen said de ament offi- cials only found Lead suckers. There were no reports cf other f ah beIng killed. itsard- "Like ayhnisatae off," sad chleen. «We try ta avoid doing it when fish are ini thfrspwig run, but some- times itcnt be helped..» Schleen said unusual spring weather conditions this year delayed the spawning mrn and consequently- the fish found themselves i treated water. According ta. a department press release, the lazupricide is aLpplied for periods of 12 ta, 18 hours. It moves downstream as a block, destroyinq larval anù adult sea lamprey in its path.. Concentrations cf the lampri- cide are monitared continuously- until the chemical reaches the lake where it quickly dilutes ta undetectable concentrations. The lampricide selectively des- traye larval lamprey but is non- toxic ta huinans, pets, livestock and other anfimaIs. "Some non-target fish species may be killed if they are weak- ened through spawrung activities or by environmental stress, dis- ease or pollution,» says the release. SSchleen said the three creeke are among 30 that will ho trea- ted along the Great Làakes this year. Ini addition, streîm surveys utilizing electro-shockers or che- mical methods will be conducted throu bhout the summer on ten Lake Erie and 50 Lake Ontario tributaries. The survey will identify new or re-established populations of mea lamprey. There will aIso be trapping of adult lampreys on fiie Lake Ontario streame, hicluding Baw- manville Creek, -from mid-Api ta the end cf June. Schleen said officiais -are find- ing uless and less adulte i the tr js iLake Ontario streams. "We'vebeen -treating since 1971 and were shawing a tre- mendous impravement al around.» echleen - said the government would prefer not ta use chemicals ta control the lamprey. He noted that a "severe» fish I occurred ini the Rauge River a few years ago following a treat- ment. StilI,- «We have a prett~y good record' aver *30 years,' said Schleen. Matt Murphy spokesman for the Ontario Feceration cf Ang- lers and Hunters, said biseru knaws same fish are killear-3dur- in the procesa but the benefits faroutweigb the disadvantages. «Up ta one and hall years g it was feared the lamprey waud decimate -the fish stocks, said «Wéfouhtlong and bard ta get fimdingta contral it0» As a result cf lobbyingby the federation -and other groupe, Canada and tbe United States istituted a $10-xnillion program aimed at eradicating lamprey from the Great Làakes. "Our concern is contralling the lamprey eel,» said Murphy. t 'Id ~ ~ vut 4 li.UI A I ~ ~ - - -~ CORPORATION OF THE TOWN 0F WHITBY SPRING CLEAN-UP WEEK MAY 22 - 259 1990 The week of May 22j 1990, has been designated as Spring Clean-Up Week in the Towno Whitby.
