WITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 28,1990, PAG 21 A Monthly Fashion and Beauty Review Sportswear As we enter the '90's, most of us have become more active, both in sports as well as our regular everyday activities. Exercise has become a part of our lifestyle and people everywhere are reaping the benefits of a toned and healthy body. And while we're feeling and looking better, sportswear styles are becoming exciting and fun to wear. Long gone are the drab colours and cuts of yesterday. Today's sportswear styles are colourful, co-ordinated and make you want to get out there and "get-physical"! Exercise and sports can include many activities from walking to skydiving but for the purpose of this article three of the most popular sports and their fashions will be discussed: golf, tennis and cycling. GOLF One of the biggest changes in the game ofgolf in the last few years is that women are playing a much more active role in the sport. According to industry professionals, more and more women are taking up the sport every year. And how has golf fashion changed? Says Marylou Roberts of the new "Dynamic Golf" store in Whitby, "Golf fashions have become generally more comfortable. Cotton is used in more clothing and designs and colours have changed as the fashion industry has dictated. We're seeing more bright and fun colours. Although many private clubs have definite dress codes to which their members must conform, many of the colours and cuts have become more interesting." What's great about most golfwear is that it can be adapted to a host of other activities. Adds Roberts, "Golfwear is very practical because of its fashion flexibility. You can wear many outfits shopping, on a picnic or to do any activity that calls for comfort". Golf fashions include super rainwear, jackets and coats, that can be worn whether on or off the course. TENNIS One of the great things about tennis is that it is a sport for all seasons. The major change taking place in tennis fashion, according to Bill Hamilton of "Nevada Bob's Golf "sizzle" & Tennis" store in Whitby, is that "Complete outfits, co-ordinated sets all with splashes of bright and wild neon colours are what the public wants. People are going for matching shorts, tops, sun visors, socks, shoes, warm upsuits, sportsbags and even matching racquet and balls. Yes, there's even a multicoloured neon tennis ball called Wild 'n Wooly"'. White and pastel shades are still the preference on the courts but it's the splashes of colours that add the sizzle! Tenniswear is adaptable to other racquet sports such as badminton, racquetball and squash. Adds Hamilton, "Tennis is always growing in popularity and because of its social nature, tennis players have become more fashion conscious". CYCLING Cycling has definitely become among the hottest fitness activities in the last decade. Everywhere you go, péople are cycling whether for transportation or for the fun of being fit. According to Mike Susko of "Bay Sports" in Pickering and now in Oshawa, "Cycling has become very fashionable. The clothing in cycling is both functional and fun. Hot neon colours in green , orange and pink are terrific because they not only look great but they're very practical because it makes the cyclist more visible on the road since they glow at night. What you see on many cyclists today are cycle shorts, often in lycra which go down to the lower thigh and cycling tights which are ankle length. Tops for cycling are either team jerseys or t-shirts. Team jerseys fit snuggly and are aerodynamic, making it a popular choice for the experienced cyclist. The cycling t-shirt is one of high quality and bas three pockets at-the back. "Shoes, gloves, and helmets are all important accessory items because of their functional value. Today, they also look great because the colours and styles are fashionable. So get out there and "get physical"! Whatever the sport, it will make you feel and look great. And remember the most important thing. HAVE FUN!
