Usually taking place during Thursday night opening ceremonies, contestants are required tu be betwen the ages Of 17 and 23, neyer married, neyer divorced, neyer had children and available for the four days of the fair. Winners must attend a cou ple of other functions during the year and enter the Missa(JNE contest ini August of the followingyear. To date, there are six entries for this year. TIhis year the pageant will be held Maty 31. Last year's Miss Brooklin Fair is 19-year-old Amber Prost of Whitby. She entered '«just for the fun of it," but says it turned out te be one of the best years of her life, and one of the most inorable. Arnber's memories begin when, in spring last year, her parents saw an entry form i the newvspaper. They one it eut te, her and asked her if she wanted te enter.p "I guess I always wanted te, do it,» says Avnber. qI thought it would be fun.» Amber was one of nmne contestants, none of whom she knew. Centestants are judged i five categories: a personal interview, the contestantes self-introduction, a two-niinute apeeh on a tepie of choice, how they model clothes (from Te BrookUi Village Shep), and answers te impromptu questions. A queen and twe runners-up are selected. The contestants theniseves vote for Miss Congeniality. The queen is presented with a tiara, banner and flowers, $250, a photo and silver-tray; the first runner-1up gets $150. ,tahotu; the second runner-up géta $100anapht;l con ta receive a $25 gift certificate from Brooklin "Village $hop and a four-day pass te the fair. Horace Everett donates a trophy for the queen. There is always entertainment for the pageant. This year there wiii be Irwin Smith Music from Por-t Ferry, Inta-Kids Dance Troup from Whitby and a guest singer from Stouffville, 13xiear-old Lawmie Wallace. You ride in the parade and wave, hand eut ribbons for the herse show, other shows and baby contest, and plaques for the car "In October I attended a banquet fer ail the people who worked with the fair. In February there was a convention (2 days) at the Royal York put on by the Agricultural Board of Onitarie. Ail the fair queens attended seminars.' Al ki uens enter the Miss CNE contest in August. IhsyearAr is one of 118 contestants. The seminars at the Royal York were te help the contestants prepare for this competition.
