By Trudie Zavadovics After much debate, the Dur- ham Board of Education on Mon- day voted to establish an "éduca- tion centre communications team" to be in place by Sept. 10, when the board plans to make a decision on a new education centre. The team of three trustees, sitaff and others would set the time frame gather facts and establish a budget, with regard to communicating plans for a new Durham Board of Education Centre. The debate oentred around whether such a committee should be formed before the issue of a centre was voted on. «rm concerned about passing a motion at this time,» said trustee Audrey McLean of Oshawa. "No decision has been made. Fm not anxious to support a motion that might seem we are going ahead witlit.» "I think we have to look at bringing to a head on Aug 27 what we are going to do withe the education centre," said Oshawa trustee Ruth LaFarga. «It's important to contact people now. Once the decision has been made bv the board we can activate the Cornmittee. If the decision is not to go with the oentre, we say thank you.», Chairman I an Browvn emphas- ized the need ta have the ground- work in place. «We are not pre-emptin *a board decision,7 said Brown. e' are simply laying some ground- work. «We should get a green light first,» said trustee Lloyd Clarke. Brown said that a full presen- tation would be mnade ta the board Aug. 27 to «discuss and clarify" plans. There would then be a two-week study of the issue (with input from the public) and it would corne ta full debaté Sept. 10.1 "If this board decides not to go with the education centre, we also have ta communicate that decision to the public.» Brown later told reporters that the need for a new education centre has been apparent sinoe 1981. "ur)~j current building was built in 1960 when we were an Osha wa board. Since then we have been an Ontario (Couney) committee and now Durhami. e serve seven locations. There's no return.» He sees the system as an inefficient way to communicate on a regular basis. «We are a big, big organization and we deserve te have reason- able acommodation for our staff." (There are about 500 on staff). Brown said that the education centre would in no way detract fromn the buildin of new schools. Funding woud corne locally, and the board would either enter inta a lease/ purchase arranige- ment or debeniture. He said the board maï beable ta seil off some of ts real estate te help pay for the centre. nhe education centre is beirig proposed as a complex ta, inchide a new secondary chofor which the ministry has already alloted 49 per cent of the funding.
