Despite an 11-10 overtime loss te the Maulers, the junior A Whiitby lacrosse teain showed the heart that the team's* managfe- ment saw at the start of the season, and which was evident in another recent game against the powerful St. Catharines teain. A goal by (Jhad, Grills with just over a minute left in the over- time period gave Peterborough the victory. Warriors have played their best games against Peterborough this season, despite iosing al tbree contests by narrow niar- gins. Greg VanSiekle scored six goals.and added two assists for Warriors. In their next gaine Warriors faced St. Catherines Spartans, a teain unknown te Witby until this point. A strong Whitby effort resulted in a 13-2 blowout., On July 8, Whitby opened with an 8-2 victory over a much improved Beaches lacrosse squad te secure a berth in the championship final. As expected, Peterborough Lakers was the other team te advance te the finals, with Peterborough winning ail three gaines in their prliminar division of the teurnaent. This was an appropriate ending as these two teamns are currently the best in the province. Whitby was expecting a tough contest. Peterborough have been beaten in al four previous encounters and were expected te be up for a shot at their arcbrivals. When the- whistle went, Warriors responded with one of their best performances ever. As play progressed tewards the Peterborough end, numerous give-and-goes and fast breaks were exhibited by the VWitby teani. When Peterborough approached the Whitby end, they were constantly faced with a wall of six red jerseys, one of which was rushing out te meet the bal carrier. Despite outstanding goaltending by Jamie Plunkett and solid play by Lakers such as David Lloyd and Tyler Harris, the final score was a well deserved 7-0 win for Whitby. When asked what made the difference, Warrior Mike Semeniuk said simply "Defence." Head coach Ian Wailes cautioned the players not to take this latest victory teo lightly. "They are working teward the saune goal as we are, namely te win the provincial chanipionships. We are on tep now but we have more work te do if we want to stay theire.". Leading the Whitby offence was Blaine Down with 14 points, followed by Jeffrey Frazer with 12 points, Mike Morrison nine points, Kyle Wailes and Sean MacRury 5, Matt McKay, Ian Haywood and Stephen Hoar four, John Chesebrough and Jay. Harrison three, Rory Smith and Michael Kopnieczny two, and Mike Semneniuk with one point. A solid effort both defensively and offensively was provided by Bobby McBride and, Matt Meyer. Goaltender Tara Wailes put forward another top performance. In addition to two shuteuts and a 0.75 goals against average, she contributed three assists te the offensive effort. The tyke A team is now preparing for the upcoming Mississauga lacrosse tournament during which they hope te add te their 13-gaine undefeated streak. Paperweights win 2 Whitby Jf£yoes paperweight lacrosse teain won two gaines and lost one in the Hamilton Super Series over the weekend. Whitby defeated Spartan A.C. 9-3 in the flrst gaine. Tyrler Harrison scored five, -Brandon McBride two, Ricky Passfield and Brock Bunstina one each. Whitby -continued its winning ways with a 17-1 victory over Scarborough. McBride tallied six, Aaron Gallas had four, Harrison three and singles went te Andrew Glen, Nathaniel Andres, Kyle Musseman and Jeremi Brimble. Whitby played a thrilling contest against the Excelsiors from Bramnpton, losing 8-6 in a hard-fought contest. McBride scored two, with singles by Gallas, Brimble, Buntsnia and Glen. Darren Denyes, James Muniford and James Liske earned assists while Erie Collins provided timely checlks on defense.
