WH1BY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTIEMBER 26, 1990, PAGE 9 Attersley« says incident 'blown out of prprtion' By Trudie Zavadovie Maâyor Bob Attersley says an incident that broughlt 20 police to Pickering Hig1h Scool last week was non-racial, and he slammied the media and council members for not getting their facts straight. Attersley, commissioner Of Durham Reffional Police, said that the incident involved one gang against -another, and the fact t1la the gangs happened to be of different colors was not the issue. "The police department is per- turbed. Mernbers of council are making commenta that are not factual,» said Attersley. "If anyone is going to speak on police efforts, c eck with the chief or deputy chief before stkîday more press peole Don't blow this out of propor- tion.» Ajax councillor -Pat Clark, whose son attends the sehool, echoed Attersley's, sentiments. "I couldn't agree more with Mayor Attersley. Yes, there was supposed to be an incident. It, was a non-event. Nothing hap- pened. "Police have aasured me, the situation is under control. I was totally satiafied. I received just as many phone calls Friday, Saturday and Sunday from parents who foît the situation had been dfued hywere delighted< with the way police handed the situation." Police were called to the achool with reports that a gang from Toronto was on the way to the school to start a "racial riot." As it turna out, nothing happened. Regional chairman ary Her- remia has called for a. tas k force to be set up to examine the racial situation in Durham Region. Mayor Attersley questioned the need for such a force since police already ait on five multiculturwal boards. Herrema aaid hie wants to be proactive rather than reactive. "The matter is escalating. We have to recognize the problem and deal with it." Herrema said that this was not the only incident of which ho was aware, but hie did not ela- borate. "We cannot afford to ignore the problem, for it to boil and fester. The board of education has to be involved. I commend, through Mayor Attersley, the police department and thé way they handled thinga. t was superb." Don't Go To Ottawa!
