The remaining section te, Hwy. 35/115 will. be planned as an eight-iane freeway. A transit right-of-way will also be pianned as part of the Hwy. 48 te Dur- ham Rd. 34 section. This right-of-way wiil allow for some form of rapid transit but no decision about what form it wil take bas yet been made. The presentation te, committee was part of the «wrp-Wpr tion of the studys intial ph~ase. The four routes under conside- ration were originaliy presented Iast spring and since then the study team has been processing comes from both the public and government agencies. Patrick Reynolds, project manager for the ministry, teid the ree Press the team will soon begin work on, the recom- mended route. However, local councils, inter- est groups and varlous govern- ment agencies are being given one last opportunity te comment. «We want te make sure we've not missed anything. We're coi- lecting ail the oddsand ends,"' explained Reynolds. Once this final information gathering process is completed, t he teami will begin preparing the preferred route. Reynolds noted that Whitby's response te the four possible routes was prepared soon after the study team's presentation iast May. Some of the suggestions are being seriousiy considered said Reynolds. These include interchanges at Ashburn Rd. and Thickson Md and modi1ying the route te avoid the Heber Down Conservation Area. 1The recommended route will be based on a number of environ- mental and engineering aspects. After it is presented the study teain will again compile the pub- lic's and local governments' res- ponses te assist in preparing the final route. Once the final route bas been chosen it wili be submitted te the Ministry of Environment for An evl. enaassessment report will also be submitted to the ministry upon compietion of the study. Reynolds is hopeful that a cost estimate of the project wiIl be known ini January. He said the teaxn tried to ut together a «bail park figue" as spring but that proved * ficuit. Uncertainty about the number of interchanges required and actual path of the highway, for example, made it a futile exerc- ise at that -point said Reynolds. Also, the estimated figure will be based on' 1990 construction costs which may nort be applic- able by the time work actuaiiy beg*ns added Reynolds. As for when that wili occur depende on the spending piori- ties of a future governmnent said Re ointed out that the year 2001 is the target date for.com- pletion of the 407 fromn Missis- sauga te Hwy. 48.
