The -Salvation Army, Red Cross, Durham Region social ser- vices deïartment, Whitby- Com- munity are and Durham Board of Education were but a few of the local agencies participating in the relief effort. Donations of food, clothing and furniture were so great that the former Cobi Fo ods warehouse on Brck St. N. was transformed into a distribution centre. Volunteers from Whitby and surrounding municipalities spent the weekend following the Oct. 4 fire manning.the depot te ensure that no families went without. Local businesses collected donations from staff and custo- mers while a trust fund te help the victims was opened in a downtown bank. Several families had immigra- ted te Canada during the I ast few years. Many lost virtually everything they owned and most did not carry fire insurance. Although arson was deter- mined to h ave, caused the fire, as of last week, Durham Regional Police had not yet made any arrests.
