PAGE 10, WH1TBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1991 I OTJrERWOMAN -MASK (1988)9 by Beau Dck, wil be part of an exhibition of works by Northwest coast artists, at Ille Station Gallery starting Feb. 16. Courthouse Play hilarious Arod laugh was promised, and plenty are delivered by the Whitby Courthouse Theatre in their current production, 'Run- For Your Wife.' The Ray Cooney comedy farce is played with gusjta by a superb cast of veteran performùers whose enthusiasm for the fun, wacky plot and characters is shared throughout by the audience. Set li England, around Lon- don, Jim Rensihaw portrays John Smith, a taxi dr-iver who with a perfectly timed schedule, h~as two wives, one in Stratton, one in Wimbledon. But a concussion, from a bump on the head from a handbag swung by an elderly lady, has upset that schedule, leadinq to, calîs ta the police from both wives. John confides bis dilemma ta friend Stanley -Gardner, played by Jim Neilly. Their attempts ta, conceal John's secret- fromù the wives and police detectives lead- them and aIl other characters deeper and deeper into deception anTehlarious confusion.' Theplay ssti two homes (one wife mn each), but apoear as oe on the stage; That single, yet dual, setting, -designed by David Lv, complements the quick pace of the action and accen- tuates the comic rhythm that is constant throughout, a credit to dietrJoan Hill and producer Garvin Farr. Renshaw and Neilly work nicely together as the would-be schemers while Joyce McCready (as wife M(ary Smith) and De b Smith Schregardus (as wife Bar- bara Hunt ) are strong in their roles. Bill Steele, as homosexual neighbour Bobby Pranklyn, adds yet another dimension ta the comic elemnent. Rick Kerr and Bert Heaver are the police detec- tives who also cannot escape the confusion of identities which results from John's efforts te hide his secret. Neilly, in particular, is out- standing. At moments when the play's action might wane he continues te tickle the funny'bone with facial gestures or body movements, or a combination thereof, as he reacts ta the in- creasingly zany facade which he and John are creating. Acting, timing and excellent stage manaement ail contribute toward a hugely entertaining Production that comes with a Guaranted te make yen laugh.?
