t 't Resi*dents worried* about'future Region headquarters builIding By MLfke Kowalaki Area residents have been assured that a new Durham Region headquarters will comple- ment thefr neighbourhood. Councillor Joe Drummi made, this commitment last week ta homeowners worried about plans for Whitby's portion of a new regianal gvrmenttacility. Drumm's promise came during a public meeting before Towni ccl's planning and develop- ment committee. Durham Region has applied for a rezoning of a 4.12-acre site at the southwest corner of Gar- den St. and Bassett Blvd. The property, located behind the ýexisting regional headquar- tors on Rossland Rd., now carnies a development zone designation which is essentially a <holding zone category. The Region wants it zaned institutional ta prmit possible expansion of the Rosland build- ~atyear Durham Region cauncil voted ta build twonew facilities for its headquarters, one in Whitby and the other in Oshawa. ÀAlthough the Oshawa site was Land regristry FROMPAGE 8 "The registration clerks are not in as bad a mood since they're not cranimed together,» Brown explaied. Even thou h the end of June has historically been the busiest period of the year for the registry office, Brown said that the last Friday in June is not always the busiest day of the year. Other factors, such as the in- plementation of the gooda and services tax or the closinq of a 300- or 400-unit condominium, can make an y other day the busiest one of t he year. One of the registry office's big- gest problems is a geographic one. Since lawyers often have ta close deals âat mare than one registry office, the Whitby regis- try offices location outaide Metro Toronto makes it difficult for lawyers ta close their deals quýickly and smoothly. Despite the increased number of poplein the Whitby reistry office on June 28, the staff see- med ta cape well. The registration counter, where lawyers corne ta register documents and mortg aeshe a piece of land propet is either purchased or sold, opened approximately' five times the number of registration stations as usual ta speed up the regist- ration process. OPrRew's shoes1 chosen last month- location of the Whitby portion lias not been determined., However, Kate MacGregor of the Region's lega1 deprtont, tald committee the Garden-Bas- sett -site will, likely be selected. Included in the Wbitby facility will be the 'council camàbons, chairman's office and clerk's, finance, legaI, economic develop- ment and human resources departments. Thlentario government has not yet- indicated if the court rooms and court offices and assessment office now in the Rossland building, will be part Of the new facility, said Macregor. But in respones .ta residents' questions, MacGregor could pro- vide little information about the -size and-design of the structure since council ha not yet made a decision. Details should be . known within the next year, said Mac- Gregor. Drumm a regional councillor, said it will be somne time before construction begins. «It will take a long time, this is just the beginning of a new reional headquarters,» said «It's a long way~s away, we don't have the bucks right nowM When work doos start, Drumm said the building will not detract from the neighbourhood. «When we build our own build- ing we will do it so people enjoy it, not endure it," said Drumm. The application will be circula- ted for comment from various public agencies before coming back ta, committee with a recoin- mendation from planning staff. ~~AMADEUSr- 1756 SEAFSOD and STEAKHOUSE 1180 Simcoe St. N.
