Acting to promote public safety BJyDrmodWht Durham Cenftre MPP The Solicitor Ganeral recently introduced amendments to th& FireMarshal Acd that should, when passed, offer much greater public protection from .fire and environmental hazarde. After events such as the Hagersvilie tire fire and iast, faIll's apartment fire here in Whitby,- the need has been demonstrated to strengthen the fire marshal's powers so that such environmentai and social tragedies can be prevented. Locally, there is a tire dump and another site that shouid be deait with. People in Whitby have been concrned with these threats te our community. However,1 your governments have niot yet had the legal ability te act on your behaif; as we s3hould liave. We do flot need to, have another local tragedy.. Thfe changes in law would permit the lire marshal and assistants te, issue an order for corrective action where the environmental consequences of a fire might be sericus. This would bo the cse with the potential of a tire fire. On occasions when. the owner, or person responsibie, ia unwilling or unable te take action, the fire marshai and bis assistants can take action. This wouid only. happen mi rare circuistances and wouid require the authorization of the Pire Code commission. Although rare, communities such as ours need te know that no one can hoid their safety te ransom. No one con refuse te look after the dangers that their properties create. The need for these amendments was pointed out last fail and winter on several occasions by local fire officiais. I hope that the proposed amendments will address the concerna that- they expressed then.
