Headquarters rezoning app*%roved By Monio Boucher The first step in the planxied expansion of Durham Region headquarters in Whitby was approved by Town ceuncil last week. The Region wants te rezone a 4.12-acre parcel of land, at the northwest corner of Bassett Blvd. and Garden St., from "develop- mental" te «institutional.» The property is part of. a 19- acre site acquired by the Reg«on from the United Church of Canada in 1978. The Region already has an -existing building on Rossland Rd. containing both Region offices and provincial courts.ý According te planning directer Bob Short,ý no building iii the area can exceed eight stereys in height under the institutional Councillor Joe Drumm said the Region bas no Plan te start construction for the building for a few years. He said the proposed building * ansion would be good for Drumm said residents should not be concerned about increased traffic in the area because most workers for the Region would be off on weekends. The Region also plans to expand its administrative offices in a new Region building ini downtown Oshawa. Election forums Oct. 24,25,29 nhe Whitby Chamber of Commerce and Junior Chamber will hold election forums on Oct. 24, 25 and 29. T'he Thursday, Oct. 24 forum, to be hosted by the Junior Chamnber, wiil be for ail ward candidates. The Friday, Oct. 25 foruim, hosted by the Chamber and Junior Chamber, will be for candidates for the two echool bords and for the- hydro-electric commission. The Tuesday, Oct. 29 forum, hosted by the Chaznber, is for candidates for mayor and regional council. The Oct. 24 and 25 forums begin 7 p.m. at the council chambers in the municipal building. The Oct. 29 forum begins at chambers.
