Those are just some of the results of a survey of municipal candidates in Durham Region by the Durham Environmental Net- work. Of the 21 candidates (for mayor, regional council and ward seats) i Whitby, all but six responded to the survey. Yes/no responses by Whitby candidates te questions corresponded closely to responses by candidates in Durham as a whole. For example ail but two candi- dates in Whitby favour a Dur- ham-only plan for waste reduc- tion, involving no import and no export of garbage. Of all Durham candidates, 79 per cent favour the plan while 10 per cent don't. Only one Whitby candidate, James Priest, candidate for regional council, supported a user pay asstem (31 per cent of region candidates supported the idea). Only two Whitby candidates, Dennis Fox for east ward and Priest, opposed mandatory recy- cli candidates were divi- ded as to whether there should be a reduction in the number of garbagepick-ups, but only two ShirleSctt in centre ward and Ross for regional council, supported a one-bag limit per household per week. Whitby candidates, as did can- didates for all the region, unani- mously supported a more pro- active approach to the collection of household hazardous wastes and were unanimous that the local pollution index readings should be published and advi- sories published when the public health hazard level is approa- ched. There were also no "nay" res- ponses by Whitby candidates to thefollowing questions: -- Do you support the develop- ment of municipal strate.es aimed at implementing zero dis- charge of persistent toxic sub- stances? -- Will you support full environmental assessments for proposed incineration facilities? -- Do you support increased public transit services, especially between municipalities, with links to villages and towns north of the lakeshore? - Will you actively work towards successful completion of the low level nuclear waste siting process? -- Do you support amending the Planning Act te incorporate the basic requirements for an environmentally enlightened land use planning process (back- ground material attached)? Only Keith Harris, centre ward candidate, said no to «Will you advance the incorporation of energy efficient home construc- tion standards (R-2000 or better) in building codes throughout Durham Region?" Only Geoff Rison, east ward candidate said no te "Do you support tihe naturalization of a portion of parks and other muni- cipally owned lands? Fox gave the only "no» res- ponse to "Do you support the establishment of an ecological and environmental advisory com- mittee (EEAC) for Durham Region?" Eight Whitby candidates sup- ported the total elimination of spraying in public areas while six were against the suggestion. Almost 70 per cent of candidates in the region support the eli- mination. Nine Whitby candidates said the 1991 Durham official plan should be put on hold until the Ontario government is satisfied that the plan supports its evolv- ing conservation policies. Six didn't agree that the plan should be put on hold. Fifty-three per cent of candi- dates in the region agreed with the suggestion, while 31 per cent did not (some candidates wrote comments which were not trans- lated -into yes/no answers, so figures didn't necessarily add to 100, per cent). Sixteen area environmentai groups supportd the survey pro- ect. No candidates from Brock Township responded to the sur- vey. From Whitby, those not res- ponding were regional council candidate Derek Glass, north ward candidate David Brennan, west ward candidate'Dave Wall, and centre ward candidates John Dolstra, Robert Palmer and John Lazenby.
