Emm was asked at a recent candidates' meeting in Ashburn if the problems he encountered with spending guidelines would affect his financial decision-mak- ing on council, and if a police investigation. was the resuit of thé incorrect statement. Emn s'aid he «didn't lie" when he made his financial statement, it- was only an. oversight by his auditor that he exceeded the lumit on a -certain section. «The ministry told me there was no problem, I could correct it,"said Emm. Emni again repeated that he was "totally honest» about bis statement, to the extent that «I'm the only candidate who declared everything, even my Visa Card.» Enim said his own investiga- tion of the matter revealed that a local reporter was "fed" the infor- mation about the incorrect state- ment. Emm did not state who fed the information. There was applause by the audience of about 25 people whén Emni completed bis explanation of the oversight. But the province had already decided on a number of locations elsewhere. However, Oshawa did get a college, said Edwards, adding that it cost about $35 million te operate the college last year. "Your idea doesn't make sense,» Edwards told Emni. "Nothing , ventured, notiqlg gained,» replied Emm. "It's not someting a municipa- Iity can decide," said mayoral candidate Lynda Buffett. «Yes, it would be nice to have a university in Whitby, bit it will mean provincial funds are needed and they don't have those funds now."
