County of Northumberland have agreed te jointly co-ordinate an aerial spra program in conjunction wit the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources te help combat the infestation of the gypsy moth pest. The gypsy moth caterpillar is one of the most serious defoliating insects of hardwood stands in southern and central Ontario. The program is partially subsidized by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The administrative budget for the Region is covered 80 per cent by the provincial government and 20 per cent by the Region. The landownor cost for spraying is based on a sliding fee schedule of a fiat fee of $60 for the first three acres, an additional $15/per acre for the next four te 15 acres, $1/acre for the next 16 to 50 acres and $1iacre for over 50 acres. These funds are applied to the direct spray costs with the balance also being picked up the province. Northumberland Country lias been invoived with the prograi ince 1986 and is now ment that includes the signature of Environment Minister Ruth Grier to store the PCBs on uti- lity-owned land. According to Tom May, mana- ger of Whitby Hydro, discussions are underway to obtain a site for the toxic chemicals. Te board also wants te impie- ,ment a junior kindergarten* pro- gram, that would result in about 4,000 more students into the schools... The projected total amount te, be spent over the next five years is $447 miillion. About $206 million is expected te ho funded locally, through. taxpayers' dollars. "This is not some fairy-fairy dream," said Brown. "There's no more room for parking, no more room for por- tables no more room for any- thing/' ho said. The board currently has approximately 56,000 students enrolled in 92 elernentary and 19 secondary schools and expects te get about 1,500 more students each year, in addition to the proposed junior kindergarten im- plementation. Approximately 13,776 studonts have classes in 492 portable classrooms this fali.
