Whltby Freie Press', Wednesday, October ââ, 1992, Page2 New Ioo' the Vlswagn Gl By Glen Konorowskl Everyr once in a while a car cempany has on.eof those banner years that includes a bunch of new car introductions. Volkswa- gen is having on. of those years. The year begzan with some new and revamped-Audis. Next was a new VW camper followe d b the introduction of tle Golf with its 'trunked' sibling, the f'etta, on the way. 'Jusgit this week I received in$'or- mation about the new Golf. Some of you car buifs. may kneow that the. Golf has.been 4round Eutrope for some time. Many autjo- nalists thought that the, car would havee , here' sooner. The. cars that we. will b. getting here in Canada will b. coming from VW's Mexico plant. by JiI Mclntosh Expainngthe features, In days, gene by . -- when cars; were lessa complicated than they arenew -- mostecars only had the manufacturer's naine and the medel witten on the outaide cf them. -Today, cars net only corne with a lot more features, but mest of them have the. names of those items written prominently some- where on the body. With se many options available, most people don't know just what it is- that's written on their cars. Here are some of themn, with explanations.- * EFI -- short for 'electronie fuel injection.!Most cf teday's cars use this system, which injecta gasoline directly .'inte thé. cylinders rather than threugh -a carburetor. Fuel injection- starts easily-and is more fuel-efficient, but-the injeetors must b. -kept dlean te avoid problems. e ABS ~-short. for 1'anti-lock braking system.' If you are on a slippery surface and you lock eup your wheels, the car will skid, which is why you should puznp the brakes te, keep the car under control. Anti-lock brakes do ýthis for you, pumping the brakes much - faster than you could yourself, te help< keep the car under control'in pâr conditions. DOHC -- short for ' dual overhead carni'The. canishaft or q9cam' controls the engine's valves, which governs the engine's intake cf air 'and exhaïust cf spent gases. An ' overhead cani' is one that sits above the valves, rather than alongside them, as in eider cars The benefit is that the engin. lias fewer moving parts. 16 Valve -- refers te the valves operated by the camshaft. Older cars have two valves ~r cylinder; on a 16-valve, four-cylinder engine, eacii cylinder has four valves. This allowsthe engine to, run more ,efficiently with more power,, since it's ;le te take in more-air and expelspent gases- b:etter. dýAutomatic overdrive --as you drvefatr, your- engin. works harder,- using more., gasoline. Automatic overdrive in ý your. transmission is a gear reduction that, ges the same spe.d with lesa 'effot fom the engine. The engin. uses- leas gasoline' and is under mucli lesa strain. For 1993- tii. Golf gets new sheet metal, a n w, group. of engines and an up raded suspén- sien. The. model Inange will con- sist of a CL (base Model), GL and the GTI. The V6 or'VR6, (VW's ternifor the V6) version of 'the Golf should artve sometimie later in the mode1 yar. 1With the rece t trend away fromn hatchbacks, VW -has seen the practicality that a hatchback has te *offger over a two- or four- door1 sedan. Let's face the facts: in a smaller car a hatchback is just a whole'lot more practical. The newsheet metal gives the Golf a much more slipperyr shape and ridged body.'Ti ardyna- mie dra coefficient of-the new Golf is 0.32,as comrpared te the older model's 0.34. This inturn improves fuel consumption, something the government is in- sisting on. 'As you may or, may nt know, side 'impact >protection Àwill b. mandatory in the - near future. Tuis has spurred many of the auto-makers te redo manr Of their new, modela 'or at,- east reinforoe 'the chassis te, passtii. side im]pact testing.' As in the past the Golf will corne as a two-door hatchback or. a four-door hatchback.- I tend te like the. styling cf the four-door as it seema te finish the car off just that little bit more. And -the. practicality of a four-door, when youl have thre. chldren, far eut- weighs. that of a two-door.1, Besides looking better with the new- shape, the headlights are new 50 per cent stronger and spread, out 20 per cent more. With theiiigher speeds at which we ail travel thesie days ýgood lightingisaniust. teGl stable this year. Ail the engines are a variation of the two;-itre overhead carn format' exc.ptthe diesel. The CL gets 'a 1.8litre, while the GL1 and GTI both share' the 2-litre. As you maiy, haveý guessed horsepower ratinga ,are,_ difereit 'for two eut of three models. The 1.8-litre firom the CL is rated at 9Ohp. -The GL and GTI, with thei two-litre get a 115hprating. Aldesel engine 'will be offered as an option on the GL model. Tbis ei. like the reat, is al new. The diesel b~ overhead cam, and displaces 1.9,itres. To lower' emissions anid-ýgain a littie extra power the diesel is turbo-charged and equipped with a catalytie converter. Power for -this engine is a-healthy 90hp. offered on the 'diesel anid GTI,. A four-speed automatic is optional on the CL and, GL modela.'"<' ' I. generally like the, new shape ~of the Golf.
