"The actera... read over their linos and come back witb a question, 'Hey, guess what? I just tbought about tbis,' (they sa). «We diacuss it and it gives a littie bit of a different interpre- tation the next time we do it -- it sort of evolves each time." 'The Road to Mecca' was writ- ton by South Mfrican playwrigbt Athol Fugard and was inspired by the life and work of artiat Helen Martins, whose home has been recognized as a national monument in South Mfrica. But the recognition camne after Martins' death by suicide. Dur- ing ber life, she was regarded by many as an eccentrie who turned ber bouse into a work of art after the death of ber husband. T'he play's main character is «MisHfelen' a South AIrican woman in lier sixties who is urged by the village minister te, move te, a seniors home and by a young friend to stay put. "The play revolves around that question," says Milla.r. It also looks at trust, friendsbip and creativity... I think it wîll teuch both your mind and your heart. "You'll be able te feel for the woman, but also understand the arguiments of the other cbarac- tors, (who wonder)... if she should be in an institution." Millar says he hopes people leave thinkingabout some of the issues raised. «I don't think they're restricted te, South Africa or 1974, when the play isP set." Fu gard's previous plays usually deait with apartheid, wbich got hlm in a lot of trouble at home, says Millar. Althougb they were popular in Europe and North Armerica, they were often censored or banned in South Africa. 'The Road' %i very subtie on the theme of apartheid.ItVs*jut mentioned very briefly... (so)it could be presentod in his own country." Fugard wrote it in 1984. Millar says ît's been very welI received, and won an award when it was presentod in New York in 1988.
