Whdby Fme Prou., Wechesday, Januaiy 20.1993, Page 17 Satisfied owners say Camry is tops On behaif of satiafled ownera, the Canadian Automobile Association (OAA) recently preaented the OAA Used Car Performance Award for 1993 te Toyota Canada Inc. Toyota earned the award for its popular Carnry model, years 1989 te 1991. In what OAA believes is the largest Canadian survey of its ind, with weIl over 30,000 respondents, 95 per cent of Carnry owners reported that if they could go back in tinie they wnîld buy the sanie car again. This yea's ' pyramiud' award is the thirdl earned for the Caniry and the eighth earned b Toyota. The Carnry previously earned the OAA award in 1988 and 1991. The Buick LeSabro was chosen secend best performer, the firat timo in years a domestic model ranked above fourth place. Other top perforniers, in descencling order, are Honda Accord, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civie, Ford LTD Crown Victoria 1993 TOYOTA Tl 00 4x2 Toyota has new, larger piuckup By Glen Konorowski If you follow the trends in the auto world, you will ho amare that Toyota has just introduced a new larger pickup eal t ho T100. Toyota cal la their trucic a xid- size. This is an accurate lescrip- tion, as it is about the-size or just sliqhptly bigger than the Dodge The pickup is aimed at the buyer who wants the reputation of a Japanese vehicle, yet the versatility that only a larger pickup can provide. The T100 comes in the conven- tional two-wheel-drive and four- wheel-drive configuration. For now, there will be ne extended cab version of the truck offered. Basa and SR-5 trini levels will lie offered on both two- and four-wheel-drive versions. Power for ail T100 trucks will come froni Toyota's ever popular overhead cam V6, already used many of their vehicles. This three-litre produces 150 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 180 lb. ft. of torque at 3 400 rpm. Mont automotive insiclers houie- yod that Toyota would have pro- duced a bigger engine for a truck of this size. The T100 will ho offered with a five-speed manual or otional four-speed automatic. OI only drove the standard and found it te lie very eany te shift, making it a comfortable ride. iInside aIl T100 piekupa one finda a very car-h le interior, similar te the amaîl Toyota truck. In the base model a bench seat is standard, while a 60/40 aplit is standard in the SR-5. The SR-5 truck I drove was very conifor- table, and I don't generally like honçh soats. ,Like the domestie pickups, the T100 will have a removable tail- gate something ail Japanese truika have been lacking. Stak-e helen on the aide walla of-the lied will grace the hoda of ail TlOOa. Following the industry stan- dard, the T100 will have rear anti-lock brakes. These brakes are power-assisted on both modela. If more is what y u want, in luxury that is, alrthe power optiens cari ho ordered on the SR-5 model. barger tires and alloy wheels will -be offered on the SIR-5 modelsalase. I only spent about an hour in the'new T100, and generally liked the feel of the trck. As you might expect from a Toyota, fit and finish were second te none. Handling in the 4x4 I drove was light and precise. In the cab everything was well-placed and very car-like, again typical of other Toyota trucks. I have been very akeptical about the succens of this truck evor since its conception. North Americans are generally very loyal te one manufacturer when it corne te trucks, especially full- sized ones. Whether Toyota can sway buyers away froni their current fuli-aize trucks should ho interesting.
