Vatican Rip, consisting of Scott Fairbrother on guitar, Chad Allen on base and Bret Judges on drumns, performs a unique style of music that has been described as British-oriented psychedelic rock. However, explains Fairbrother, "Our music is very much views of the nineties -- the kinds of things that bother us or affect us.- "That's why people can relate to, our music 50 well, says Allen. They began as a cover band, perfrmingsongs by The Who and The Vaselnes. They thon begfan work on their own music an Urecorded an album, 'Clear,' at Friendly Pirate studios in Toronto last summer. They re-recorded 'Beyond the Skies' from that album at Pyra- mid studios in Mississauga for the Velvet Records CD compila- tion that will be distributed. On the same disc are Nashville Velvet, Images in Voue, The Cameo Blues Band and Morgan Davis. "Our music will go far as long as we get our hands on the right people,' says Fairbrother. The band met The Grapes of Wrath and got some good advice as to where they should send their demos. They haveperformed mostly in downtawn Toronto at venues such as Lee's Palace, Sneaky Dee's and the Marquee. "ur.y music is widely accepted in Toronto compareddo the Whitby/Oshawa area. Because there is such a variety of music in Toronto people listen to, our music witl more of an open mind,» explains Allen. Fairbrother and Allen pre- viously were members of a band called Rowdy's Flowers. Judges was a member of a band called Mind Sets. Both bands split up and Allen and Fairbrother were looking for a drummer. "I knew Bret in public school and then lost contact with him," explains Fairbrother. 'While I was attending universJity up in Ottawa, I heard Bret's album while ho was a member of Mind Sets and heard from a friond that his band was on the rocks." "I called Bret and talked to him about joining Chad and I to formn a band, which we did early in the summer of last year. «We ail know what we're look- ing for music-wise so we ail feed off each other.» SU PAGE 10 VATICAN RIP members are Chad Allen, Bret Judges and Scott Fairbrother.
