Photo by Mark Reesor, Whtby Free Press Seleets fait short in Warkworth Whitby major atoin selects, sponsored by Brooklin & District Kin smen, were runners-up in an atoin hockey tournaient held recently in Warkworth. Whitby opened the tournament with an easy 14-O victory over Tweed. The Irwed ie battled bravely under the steady Whitby onslaught, allowing only three goals in the first period and a half. Late in the second period, Whitby scored three times in a littie over a minute te double their margfin. The third period was no contest as Whitby dominated play te record the opening gaine win. Whitby then moved on te face Brighton in their next gaine. Once again Whitby dominated lay throughout and won handily a afinal score of 80. In the championship gaine, Whitby faced a familiar foe in the Oshawa Ried Wings. In a teugh, hard-fought contest, Whitby battled valiantly te the final buzzer but was unable te solve the Oshnwa goaltender while the Red Wings scored once in the second period and once in the third to gain the 2-0 win. Whitby's coaching staff was very pleased with the team's effort against a very teugh opponent. Scoring for Whitby in the tournament were Greg LeBlanc with four goals, Greg Foxwell three goals and four assiste, BIaise Lawson three goals and two assiste, Scott Messenger two goals and three assiste, Matt Walton two goals, Jason Turkington one goal and three assiste, Kyle Tennant one goal and two assiste, NMike Gubbels one assists, Josh Brimnble one assist, Trevor Breniner one assist. Canieron Munro, who was suffering with the flu, was mnissing frein the lineup. The goltndng duo of Andrew Gubbels and Steven Pigrain were once again solid in the nets for WVhitby as they recorded two shuteute in the tournament. The coaching staff consiste of head coach Dave Walten, assistance Junior Tennant and Ted Munro and teain manager Andy Gubbels. The gaine featured many good scoring chances and fine goalkeeping at both ends. Whitby held a 2-1 lead going into the second reiod. Pickering took the lead vt w quick goals but Whitby came back to tie with a powerplay goal late in the gaine by Angela Dunn. In gaine two, the Lions took on Valley East in a fast paced gaine which saw Whitby jump into a 3-1 lead. Valley East came baek strong te tie and then jump into a 5-3 lead. The Lions refused to folk and fought basc to earn a 5-5 tie. In gaine three, Whitby beat Orleans 2-1 in a fast exciting gaine. It gave Whitby first place in the round robin and a semi-final match against fourth-place Valley East. The semi-final was a hard- checking gaine with Whitby playing strong in ail areas and winning the gaine 4-2. In the final the Lions met the hard skating Orleans teain. Whitby ran into a rash of penalties and neyer recovered W .tby .......H The Whitby Girls' Softball Association, rather than mailing registration forms, has instead scheduled dates for registration for the 1993 season. Pre-registration was held Jan. 23 and will again be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, 9 a.în. to 1 p.m., at Iroquois Park. General registration will be held at the saine location on Saturdays, March 6 and 27, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fees will be the saine as last season. Whitby juniors beat Markham In 401 league round-robin playoff action, Whidtby Midas Muffler junior B ringette teain played Markham in a crucial gaine. Knowing that the loser would he eliminated froin the 401 league final, Whitby started cautiously. Playing good, strong defense against a teain that had won two of the previous three gaines, Whitby held Markhani scorelese in the firet period. Markham was not as succeseful in stifling Whitby scoring, allowing four goals in the firet period as Whitby skated to a 5-2 wn Scoring for Whitby were Ainanda Wheelans (two goals), Kimi Vanderlip (one goal, one assist), Tanara Wiesiolek (one goal), Jen Penny (one goal).
