Page 22, Whitby Free Preas Wednesday, Febnuaz 24, 199 LETT'ER: Stronger abstinence teach ing urged To the Editor: Parents are forming coalitions across the region te address the growing concerna being raised regarcling the content and proposed content of the sex education curriculum. In light of the growing health consequences of.promiscuous sex, it is extrernely important for the safety of our eilîdren that solid,- accurate, factual information regarding AIDS, sexually- transmitted diseases (STD) and alternato lifestyles be taugyht, rather than politically motivaÎted propaganda and haif-truths. The Durham Board of Education must take a more aggessive appoeh and stronger sadon Uabstinence teaching prograins (wbich they say they support) than what are now in place. Condoning the philosophy represented by the 'Growing Up Series' puts the board in conflict with- what a lot of parents feel is best for their children. The educational institution is supposed to be a supportive extension of the home, and this liberalized approach is no longer neutral but,« indeed, very progressive, -and contrary to what most parents would choose for their bilîdren if given the choice. The parental ability to influence the morals and values of our children is being handed over te the schools and their officiais because of the lack. of interest and involvement from parents. A values-neutral curri- culum cannot address today>s sensitive issues. A neutral position, in itself, is someone's value. The gaine featured exciting end-te-end rushs with both teains' goalies making big, saves. Justin Zainmit and Dusty Sargent were especially sharp in not allowing a goal through regulation time. The overtinie poriod saw Bradford score in the second minute to win the chainpionship. Scott Cook, Andrew Allison and David Besco and the other forwards backchecked relent- lessly. The defense of Mike Liske, Ryan Robb, Chris Michaud, Nicholas Michie, Bian Leni and Mike Kobrynovch stopped many oppositionrýushs and kept the front of the net clear.
