Whitby first played Pickering. The gaine started out ver close, with goalie Amanda Wheelans inaking numerous saves te keep the score close at 1-1 haîf way through the first period. Erica -Giles then took ever, scoring once and assisting on two others in a six-minute span te blow open the gaine and send Wihitby inte the teurnament semi-final with a 5-1 win. Wheelans was chosen MVP of the gaine and Erin Carroll scored twe goals in a solid effort. The tournainent semi-finn.l was played againat a tearn froin Scarberough. This gazne was aise, vory close, with Whitby scoring the only goal of the firet period, a nice, unasaisted effort by Km Vanderip. Whty exploded ndway through the second half, with Vandripsoring two goals and Tamara W;iesiole scoring three in four minutes. This sent Whitby on their way te a 5-0 win and a berth in the finals against the home teain frein Ennismore. Atoms in league se mfinals The Whitby minor atomn AAA hockey club has advanced to the league semi-finals by sweeping a series against the Richmond Hill-Vaughan Kings 3-0. Whitby, sponsored by Dundas Centre Guardian Drugs, had received a bye in the opening round of the playoffs as the result of its first-place finish during regular season play. Whiitby's first series was Erika Rodrigues, who lives in Whitby and plays goal for the Pickering junor ringette teamn, won the goalie shooteut on Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Mariposa tournament. Redrigues won the trophy by stopping 80 per cent of the shots she faced. Streng goaltending by Ian Watson enabled Whitby to elininate Richmond F1111 in three straight gaines as the hoinetown squad won 6-3. McBride as well helped the attack with two assists, with singles ging te Down, Lalonde, Kyle Branch, Walsh and Jay Harrison. Whitby now faces the Quinte Red Devils in the ininor atoin Eastern AAA semi-finals. Quinte finished second to Peterborough during the regular'seasen in their own division and eliminated Markham in their quarter-final series, three gaines to one. During regular season play, Whitby met Quinte twice, defeating thein 2-1 at home while dropping a 5-4 decision in a game ,plaved in Marmora. The semi-final series promises te be extremely competitive. The series will open at Iroqu~ois Park in Whitby on Saturday,Feb. 27, 2:15 p.m. The second gaine will be in Marmora on Sundy, Feb. 28. 3-on-3 at Anderson Durham Region high school teams are invited to participate in a 3-on-3 basketball tourna- ment at Anderson CVI on March 6. A maximum of 20 teains can compete in the event te, be pre- sented by Anderson and Wilfrid Laurier University. The event is being organized by Trevor Demeris and Christina Schmiegelow, Anderson gra- duates who are now in their second years at Laurier. They organized the tourna- ment as part of their physical education administration course. The tournament entry fee is $30 per teain, with a free T-shirt for each participant. There will be prizes for the top teains. Registration forins can be obtained frein Mr. Phillips at Anderson CVI (668-5809) or frein physical education departinents at high schools. ___ The second gaine shuteut went te Wheelans with strong defensive assiste from Tanya Campeau, Kristine Soper and Anne Henderson. The tournamnent final was a tremendous test of Whitby's defense (one goal against in twe gaines) and Ennismorels offense (22 goals for in two gaines). Whitby scored with five seconds left in the flrst pariod te tie the score at 2-2 goîng into the second haIL The contest was very 3xcitlng with good, clean, fast ringette played by both teains. The battle was won by Whitby's teain defense in the second period, allowing one goal in 14.5 minutes while scoring three. Outstanding goals from the gamne almost eut of roach. Ennismore scored with 30 seconds left te cut the lead te one goal but couldn't get the equalizer as Wihitby won 5-4 and captured the teurnament crewn. The Whitby teain matured graatly in this tournament, playing exceptional defense and solid offense while staying away froin cheap penalties.
