Included in the appeal was a holiday greeting frorn foundation chair Terry Bainbridge. Listed were descriptions of equipment te be purchased with funds raised, and descriptions of equipment already purchased from previous donations. Sharon Bell-Wilson, develop- ment director for the Whitby General Hospital Foundation, says direct mail appeals have been around for a few decades, but it was the foundation's first appeal. The foundation's goal was to raise $500 000. Aithougl they are stili collect- ing donations, the total amount raised se far by the foundation is $14,110. For a first-year preject such as this one, the returnis expected are about one per. cent of those sent eut. Fer this particular mail appeal, the return percentage was around one per cent. "I certainly amn satisfied with the first year's resuits,» says Bell-Wilson. She is hoping that the ercen- tage will increase shouZd the foundation use the direct mail appeal next Christmas.
