While the grant program itself is under review, a few high priority projeets in Ontario communities are receiving funding now te plan more effectively for long-term economic development. The Region is using the funds te conduct a study inte long-termn development potential for the waterfront area in a way that protects and preserves the environment. The waterfront area stretches from Pickering te, Newcastle. "This is a high priority project that can get underway quickly" Philip said. "The sooner work starts, the sooner the Region will be able to take advantage of local economic development opportuni- ties.", 'Many 'local residents know addressing these needs now will offer an essential improvement. for our reion," says Durhama Centre MPP Drummond White. In past years, community planning grants have helped municipalities study land use planning issues of significance te were used for developing planning documents and for projects involving provincial interests in local planning. Municipalities match the province's communty planning grants that cover 60 per cent of the total approved costs.
