They were nomîinated for national recognition by the Durham Association for Family Respite Services, a non-profit organization that assists families with a handicapped member living at home. Both served on the planning committee for a designated Canada 125 event at Wind Reach Farmn in June 1992. Approximately 200 people attended the function for volunteer and client families. The event was a natural extension of volunteer host families sharing their homes, activities, hobbies and interests with their special needs friends. Some of the highlights at Wind Reach were the petting zoo, hayrides, swings (ail wheelchair accessible) and wiener roast. The two women have been active volunteers with the agency for several years, including service on the rnembership and public relations committee and the board of directors. The inscription on the obverse side rends: "1867-1992 Out standing Contribution" and is signed by the Right Honourable Raymond John Hnatyshyn, Governor General of Canada. On the reverse side special slates are engraved in part: "Canada 125 -- Volunteer Recognition Award -- Thtis distinctive plaque Mas been created usîng heritage wood that is at least 125 years old, salvaged from barns in Ontario and Quebec. The siate Mas been reclaimed from old chalk boardis tMt are no longer used by schools. Each plaque is an original, handcrafted by persons with disabilities. " The awards are particularly apt for an agency that stresses the abilities of the disahled. Any family who would like the opportunity of a mutually beneficial experience, call volunteer co-ordinator Mary Wilson at 668-3812.
