For the 1993 model year, littie bas. chanired on this vehicle. Isuzu decided to go ail the way and build the best sport utility on the market. After ýspending a couple of weeks in one, I have to agree this is one fine vehicle. Introduced to the world in 1992, the new body had much more subtie look to it as com- p ared to the rugged looks of past Troop ers. The rounded lines and softer edges should broaden its appel o oe buyers. Aagrinterior allows for boer eag comfort and botter room for three in the rear seats. Inside, top grade materials are used, making it a cut above the com ptition. When buying a Trooper, the level of appointments determines the model. The regular model is the 'S' while the dressed up model is the 'LS.' Engine power is one of the major différences between the two models. The 'S' gets a 3.2-litre single- overhead cain V6, while the 'LS' gets a double-overhead cam ver- sion of the same engine. Power on the 'S' engine is 174 hp. while the double-overhead cam gets an extra 15 hp. pushing it up to.190 hp. Torque for the two engines are 188 and 195 lb./ft. giving the Troopr a towing capacity of 5P,000lbs. (2,268 kg.). The backbone of the Trooper is a welded steel frarne. Up front, the Trooper uses an independent axle, with a double-wishbone suspensioni held up by torsion bars. A stabilizer bar comple- ments the whole front suspen- sion, adding to the overail stabi- lity. In the rear is a solid axie with coil springs and sway bar. During my test I drove both and found them to be equal in accele- ration, with the manual just a bit faster. Like ail sport utilities, the Trooper cornes with a two-speed transfer case. This allows one to run in the worst of off-rond con- ditions. If the automatic locking front hubs are set, the Trooper can be shifted from two- to four- wheel drive while in motion. As you might expect, cargo space is great with the Trooper. e unique 70/30 split rear doors allow for easy loading. Rear seats also fold down, almost doubling the rear cargo capacity.
