Ontario Lieutenant-Governor Henry Jackman presented the commemorative medals to those nominated by Durham Centre MPP Drummond White. Those receiving awards and their community involvement (according to information recei- ved from White's office) were: * Margery Bird -- on the found- ing board of Pringle Creek Co-op Housing and board member for four years; member of environ- mental organizations and Green- peace supporter; Whitby Little eatre member. * Bernie Emoff -- five-year member of the Catholic Guild of the Blind; 15-year executive member of Local CAW 252; refer- endum committee member, Yes committee member; political activist. * Ambrose Ferren -- past mem- ber of CAW executive; CAW retiree; political activist. * Gail Forbes -- regional mana- ger of the Heart & Stroke Foun- dation of Ontario; active in organizations pertaining to women's issues. * Edward Goerz -- executive director of Hostel Services (Dur- ham) Inc.; active in homeless issues; past chair of the board of Faith Place; involved with Big Brothers for a number of years; involved with many local com- munity boards. * Laurel Hamilton -- executive director of the Rose of Durham, working with teenage mothers; on many boards of community aencies; * Chandra Hunter -- founder and president of Whitby Active and Concerned Youth (WACY) and member of various school organizations (recent recipient of Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award). * Andrew Koziar -- Yes com- mittee member; has held many executive positions with the Kiwanis Club of Westmount; political activist. * Gail Lawlor -- member of Durham Environmental Net- work, the organization that links all environmental groups in Dur- ham Region. * Bruce McArthur -- past member of Oshawa city council and Durham regional council; member of police services board for Durham Region; local entre- preneur; sailed the Atlantic in his own boat from England to Whitby. * Sandra McCormack -- execu- tive director of Denise House; involved with abused women and strong activist around abuse issues. * Dalton Molson -- active in Scouts Canada, as former cub leader, district commissioner, chair of honours and awards committee and vice president of administrative training; active in community activities by his church. * Richard Moore -- president of the Oshawa Deaf Centre Inc.; involved with disabled com- munity * Nancy Mutch -- executive director of Distress Centre of Durham Region; active in crisis counselling. * Des Newman -- chair of Durham Region Manufacturers Association; former mayor of Whitby; past chair of the Osh- awa Area Planning and Develop- ment Study; past chair of the Ontario Municipalities and past president of the Canadian Fede- ration of Mayors; member of the founding committees for Whitby General Hospital and Denis O'Connor High School; active in many local community groups. * Nancy O'Connor -- member of Outreach Abuse Prevention; activitist on child abuse issues. * Elizabeth Peacock -- pre- sident of the Oshawa & District Association for Community Liv- ing; activist on behalf of the disabled community. * Geoffrey Rison -- political candidate for municipal, provin- cial and federal seats; lead singer in his church choir and Anderson CVI; political activist. * Sid Ryan -- president of CUPE Ontario division; political activist. * Joan Skelton -- executive director of Housing Help - Dur- ham; on Ajax-Pickering Social Planning Council; on the board of many community agencies; advocate for affordable, acces- sible housing in Durham Region. * Arthur J. MEMBERS of the 'Up With People' troupe, who will be presenting their 'Rhythm of the World' show May 5 at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. The show was composed by 15 writers from six countries, and the cast, featuring people from 22 different countries, includes (back) Christina Frederikson (Denmark), Denise Frinier (California) and Bartek Klemens (Poland), shown with promotions rep Jennifer Moore (front).
