Whitby started play with a hard-fought, come-fromn-behind victory on Friday night, defeating Whitby Midas Mufler ringette teamn won the central region junior B championship title this past weekend in Omemee. Whitby's strong defensive style of play stifled some of the highest-scoring teans in Ontario's central region. Whitbty allowed only seven goals over four gaines while Whitby's sharpshooters scored 19 goals te g o 4-O for the weekend and win t he chanfipionship. In Friday's flrst gaine, the girls played the host team frein Oniemee ia a tight, defensive struggle. Neither tearn could score in the firat period although both goalies had to make many difficult stops. During a 30-second apan early in the second period, Megan Neilly scored twîce, providing al of the offence necessary for Whitby te skate to a 2-1 victory. Whitby's second tournament gaine was against a teamn frein Lindsay. The Lindsay teain played a strong, physical gaine but Whitby relied on patience and finesse to outskate Lindsay te a 7-2 victery. Six diffrent scorers accounted for Whitby's seven goals, a compliment to the abilities, unselflshness and well-rounded play of the teani. Whitby showed their best teain effort against Ennismore in their final round-robin gaine. Teaza defence took on a whole new nieaning as every VWtby player forechecked and backchecked tenaciously through- eut the gaine. Lindsay 5-4. Saturday niorning Whitby faced Oshawa and played a strong gaine, ringing up an easy 7-2 victory. In gaine three, Whitby faced a strong Sunderland teain. With a defense that completely stifled a high-scoring Ennismore side, Whitby skated to a 6-2 win, again spreading the scoring amnong five scorers. The championship gaine against Lindsay on Sunday proved te be an aggressive, physical contest with close checking and outstanding goaltending. Whitby workl<-d hard for a 2-0 first period lead and watched Lindsay battled back to tie the score halfway through the final period. Kristine Soper and Tamnara Wiesaiolek scored the final two goals of the contest te gie Whitby a well.earned ehamponship. In game four, Whitby took on Warkworth in a very fast gaine with fine play by both teams. The first period ended in a 2-2 fie. In the second period Whiitby carried the play and backed by strong goaltending by H-eather Hurst, skated away with a 5-2 victory and a berth in the final. The championahip featured Whitby and Pickering. The first period was dominated by Pickering but Whlitby goalie Hurst could net be beaten. In the second period Whitby got their gaine going and went on te a 3-1 championship victory.
