In their opnig ae against Malvery, Whtby had an easy turne as they skated te a 9-0 victory. Whitby carne out strong in the first period as they opened up a four-goal lead. Scott Messenger and Greg Foxwell shared the scoring with two goals apiece. Assists went te Chad Kawasaki and Jason Turkingten with two each; and Mike Gubbels, Matt Wallon and Josh Brimble with one. The second period saw Whitby count four more goals as they continued to dominate an outmanned Malvern club. Sharing the scoring were Matthew Walton, Gubbels, Kawasaki and Messenger. Assisting were Matt Walton with two, Trevor, lremner, Kyle Tennant, Nick Cowan and Garrett Richard with one each. Whitby coasted home ini the third period, scoring once, as they were content to preserve the shuteut for Andrewv Gubbels. The final tally wns collected by Richard with assists going te Cowan and Turkington. The second game of the tournament was a much teugher contest as Whitby faced a well disciplined and physical Mississauga teain. The gaine featured end-to-end action with excellent goaltending by bath tearas. l3oth hockey clubs failed te capitalize on soine good scoring opportunities ia the first period. Whitby finally opened the scoring with a power play goal midway through the second period from a goalmouth scrnmble. Tykes first in Aj ax tournament Whitby Kinsmen capped off a1 successful season by winning thei tyke A championship ut the Ajax1 house leaze hockey tournaient over th e aster weekend. In the first gaine of the tourney, Whitby defeated Village Sports by a score of 5-1. Providing the offence were Kyle Percewicz with two goals, Greg Williamns with a goal and an assist, and singles going te Jef Freeman and Brad Arbour. Aaron Maguire and Sean Blea had one assist each, and Jason Cordon helped eut with a strong gaine in goal. Williams led the Kinsmen in gaine two, with a hat trick and one assist in un 8-4 win over Ajax Little Caesars. The rest of the offence came from Percewicz with two goals, singles going to Cordon, Bleu and Maguire. Providing the helpers were Freeman with two, Ryan Hnatko, Mfike Childerheuse and Colin Harvey. Strong play in both ends of the rink continued in gaine three, as the boys completed a sweep et their division with an 8-2 win over Loeb's. Williams led the scoring with four goals, Percewicz added a hat trick, Freeman had a goal and an assist. Single assista went te Paddy Kelly and William Cochrane. Seini-final action would place the Kinsmen up against rivale froin Whitby Home and Rural. Kinsmen held on te, a 3-2 lead going in te the third period et an exciting gaine, then put the gaine eut of reach with four goals in the last six minutes, and advanced te the final with a 7-2 victory. Leading the offence for Kinsmen was Percewicz with three goals and an assiet, Williams had two, and singles went te lleu and Gordon. Pat Noonan had an assist, along witk Childerhouse and Harvey. Scoring for Home and Rural were Scott Morrison with a goal and an assist, and Cain Langois. The teurnament final would see the Kinsmen, Whitby league and playoft champions, up against. the Ajax playoff champions, Remax. Ajax- opened the scoring, and led afler one period 2-1. Jef Freemnan and Percewicz added second period goals, and after two periods the teames were deadlocked at 3-3. Williams scored early in the third period te, give Kinsmen their first lead in the garne. Percewicz stretched the lead te two goals as he scored on a penalty shot. Ajax got gack te within one as they scered with three minutes left. Brad Arbour playing a strong game in goal, would shut the door on Ajax for the remainder of the game. Two emnpty net goals in the final minute gave the Kinsmen a 7-4 victery and the championship. Other players making strong contributions were Stuart Petrie, Ryan Hughes and Kevin Jay. Aitheugh Anderson's scores were dlown, their spirite certainly weren't. «It was a good trip because it was such a succese starting semi- annually," says one et the team's captains, Lindsay Hewlett. Apnil 4 the team played un under-17 team and lest 7-O. This was Anderson's first gaine played outdoore. "Linda Correia (the other team coach) and I were really pleased that they final played a gaine outdoors,» says ?Howlett. On April 5 Anderson played an under-19 team and tied 0-0 and on April 6 they also tied an under- 14 teain 0-0. Florida soccer teams are pre- paring for the season pluyoffs while Anderson is just beginning their season. Betore the tournament, which Matt Walton, assisted by Matthew Wallon and Mike Gubbels, hammered home what proved te be the eventual game-winner for Whitby. Play continued back and fourth right te the end as Steven Pgram. robbed Mississauga of the potential tying goal with only six seconds left in the game. Whitby killed off the final seconds to skate .away wth the hard earned 1-0 vctory. Advancing to the championship game, Whitby faced a determined Vaughan hockey club. Whitby carried the plaiy throughout much of the gamne but were unoble te capitalize on several excellent scoring opportunities as they bounced shots ofF the crossbar and goalposts early on.- Vaughan opened the scoring midway through the second pcriod on a breakaway. Whitby continued ta press the rest of the second and into the third, finaily scoring with four minutes left in the game to knot the score at 1-1. Matthew Walton, on an assist by Breinner, counted the tying goal. The third period ended tied 1-1 and the two teams went ta overtime ta determine the winner. With bath sides playing at even strength, but ffltlout goalies, the extra period went almost four minutes before Vaughan scored the game-winner on a two-on-one break. The teain consisted of forwards Matt Walton, Mfike Gubbels, Mtthew Walton, Greg Foxwell,- Jason Turkington, Chad Kawasaki, Scott Messenger, Cameron Munro and Josh Brimble; defensemen Kyle Tennaht, Trevor Bremner, Garrett ichard, and Nick began on April 9 and took place in Orlando, some et the Ander- son players were injured. Three te four players were unable te play in the teurnament because et ligament pulls. 'VWe went into the tournament with il players se I think that that was sert et a disadvantage for the teain," says Hewlett. The teain lest 3-0 te the Serai- noIe Soccer Club. On April 10 Anderson played Winter Park's Orlando Inter- national Youth Club and lest 4-0. Aise on April 10 the teain played in Baton Rouge and.lest 8-0. "The girls really did well ... they learned a lot," says Hewlett. But they came eut winners in spertsmanship and in the experience and kçnowledge guined frein the annual excursion that invelves much more thun rugby. Andersen lest alI eight games they pluyed on the tour. "We shoul*d remember that our rugby teum's season began in Octeber, se, we're at the start. This tournament was their first turne on the field. Over there (in Englund) they're finishing their season. "I think it would be like them comning aver here and cempeting with us ut hockey," says Dave Philipe, one et the teaching staff members who accempanied the students. Among the stops on the visit was a tour ot a fermer coul mine. "Lt wus reully good that they saw thut and know what it was like ta work la a coul mine. "They learned a lot and their behaviour was excellent. I thiak that they left a big impression with their manners and con- duet," suys Philips. The students left for Bishop- stan, near Swansea in Wales, on Murch 31. They returned April il. Accomp anying the team, ulong wi th Ph ilips, were staff m embers Mike Kennelly, Rob Mitchell and Duve Taylor. Ail 34 students stayed with members et other local rugby school teams in Wales.
