"I expect that by this time next wek people wiIl know where I stand,' Soetens told the Free Press on Monday Soetens said he is stili review- ing the economic platforms of the major contenders vying to replace outgoing Prime Minister Brian Mulroney before making his decision. A convention to choose a suc- cessor to Mulroney as part y lea- der (and autornatically prime minister) will be held in Ottawa next month. The meeting wilI be held at Ileydenshore Pavilion, starting with irgstration at 7:45 a.m. Breakfat is at 8 a.m. There are still tickets left. The cost is $16 for chamber members, $25 for non-members. Noting that Schickedanz can proceed with the apartment building should it se choose, Feldman urged committee te, pro- cess the application as quickiy as possible. "If we don't get maximum ce- operation and expeditieus aLppre- val, we might net lie able te develop it as this," said Feldman. "Since 1989 the real estate market has been declining. It could lie developed as a less appealing project," he said. BËut committee members were not prepared te embrace the new proposal at this time. .% Nor were two area residents who had concerns about the pro- ject. Suse Eggert of Dunlop Street noted that proposed 4.6-nietre setbacks in the rear yards of units backing onto Mary Street are less than the 7.5 metres preferred by the Town. John Southern of Regency Crescent was worried that over- crowded" area schools cannot handle the additional children the townhouses will generate. Southern asked committee te delay the application until this probleni can be addressed. Councillor Ross Batten, com- niittee chair, pointed eut that both school boards will lie asked te comment on the application. Unless the scheol boards in- dicate that more students cannet lie accemmodated, council cannet reject the application on those grounds, Batten said. Councillors Dennis Fox and John Doîstra were concerned about lack of parking facilities and open spaoe in the proposai. A planning departmient report states that only 115 parking spaoes are provided, whereas a typical developmnent would require two spaces per unit or 130 parking spots. The report aise states that ne visiter parking area is planned. Fox rejected architect David Sheps assertion that visitors can be accommodated by the indivi- dual units' driveways. As for landscaped open spaoe, the staff report states a mini- mum of 35 per cent is considored appropriate. The application pro- poses 21.8 per cent. Fox aIse asked about plans for the Heard house. Sheps said the building will lie relocated to the corner of Ash and Mary streets and main- tained as residence. The house was once the home of Florence M. Heard, a former Whitby school principal. Atough it has yet te receive official ciesignation, the vacant house has ben proposed for pro- tection under the Ontario e i- tageAct cickedan z orginally wanted te, deniolish the building, claim- ing it was in no condition to be moved and economically unfea- sible to lie restored. But council agreed with the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) that the house has both histori- cal and architectural significance and must lie preserved. The revised rezoning applica- tion will be circulated ofurther pubic and agency comment efre coming back te, committee with a recommendation from planning staff. - -A Soetens to announoe bis choice tion delegates and six alternates were chosen at a meeting in Ajax last Thursday.
