The awards, calied the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards, recog- nized about 60 people between ages 15 and 25. Award-winners were from al acress Canada and were recog- nized for their guiding achieve- ments as Aravehe Rangers. Te two OAC Anderson CVI students who were awarded are Julie Lacy, 18, and Helen Dewar, 19. The awards, which were heid in London, were net oniy atten- ded by Prince Edward, but aise by Henry Jackman, Lieutenant- (Mevernor of Ontario. Ater the award ceremonies there was a dinner held at the Univeriity of Western Ontario where Prince Edward spoke in- dividuaily te ail Arapaho HELEN DEWAR each. Te earn the award, recipients had te have hiked 85 km over four days. Dewar and Lacy, who alse happen to be best friends, did their hiking together in Halibur- ton about two years ago. Another requirement was a year of community service. For this, the girls decided te, teach Sunda~yschooi. "Wre still doing it now, and it's been about fIve years,» says Dewar. The third revuirement was six months of physical fitness. Dewar went te a health club from January until June of 1990, and Lacy did aerobics from Sep- tember until December of 1992.
