"Many of these painters were pictorially dynamnie: their work reflected an optimism about the Canadian seene, one less intoxicated by progress than the Anierican painters who were their counterparts but with a similar exhilarating sense of purpose. "Many were inventive, involved with transformations of the works that pointed ahead. These painters were, as a whoe, those who created and maintained the modernist tradition and the energy of their work is essential to the Abstract Expressionists who developed later. "Members, in faet, often recorded through their imagery, the energy that was such a propelling factor in the group's existence. "There seemed to be rushing seas of undergrowth in the forest depths, trees that grew and Nread their leaves, flowers that boomed, people who walked down streets, horses and riders painters from Europe who had been influenced perhaps by German Expressionism or, more distantly, by Futurism, such as Fritz Brandtner, naturally found a place. 'Artists also focused on the energy of the machines, as did B.C. Binning in his painting of ships.' The exhibition is accomparded by a catalogue, and will continue until Aug. 22.
