Steelhawks captured top prize in the Whitby invitational tournament recently. In round-robin play, Steelhawks beat Peterborough 7-1, Bulintn 19-2 and Whitby 111 12-1. The three-game sweep put Whitby straight into the finals. Peterborough again provided the opposition and came eut flying. Building a 4-2 lead seemed te unsettle the Whitby team. But Peterborough, feeling they might flnally beat their archrival, were quickly brought down as Whitby poured -in the last six goals for a 10-4 win. Despite gruelling tempera- tures, the Whitby under-9 tier 1 select teain had an excellent gaine when they visited Toronto on July 5. Mike Bewerman scored the game's only goal in the first five minutes, set up by some skilful play from Ciaran Thompson and Paul Kontos. Justin Potter had eight, Brandon McBride and Nathan Cottor seven éach, Jamie Barton, Michael Kubrynski and Tyler Harrison six each, Jimmy Mumford and Tommy Solomon five each, Ryan McMichael and Trevor Watters three each and Dane Silverthorn one point. Goaltenders Kyle Schroer and Andrew Greenen were outstanding in goal, posting a 2.0 goals against average. The Whitby teain was asked to participate in the Hamnilton Super Series Tournaznent over the past weekend. The tournament is very competitive with aIl A teams involved.
