The exhibition of paintings by Forster takes an in-depth, retrospective approach that aims to put Forster into the Canadian art context -- that of modernism in this country. In 1989, the gallery received a gift of paintings and drawings by the artist. The gift not onlr expanded holdings of Forste s work but expanded the view of him as an artist. A war artist of World War 11, his art, unlike that of any other war artist, coînbined realism with abstraction. He was for the gallery a niissing link between art of the 1940s and the group founded in Oshawa in 1953, Painters Eleven. Forster was included in most major exhibitions of Canadian art organized by the National Gallery of Canada throughout the 1940s te 1950s, as' well as Solo exhibitions in Mexico, England and numerous exhibitions in Canada. Born in Calcutta' India in 1907, Forster was educated in India and England, studied art at »the Colarossi, Paris and New York. He came te Canada in 1928. 1 He is a published author of 1narrative fiction and a newspaper columnist. During the war, he worked in the Merchant Navy on the Jamaica Run in 1943 and in 1Octeber 1944 became a member .of the Royal Canadian Naval )Volunteer Reserve where he became an officiai war artist. . Now a resident of Cornwall, 3England, Forster has been an 3innovator in Canadian art hito. a 3, Is a n, a a CARLTON wa--ý de Gifts & stafioncry Whitby Mall 723-2857 Mon.-SaL 9-9, Sun. 11-5 PLIN OTTER CREEK WEST LYNDE VIDEO VIDEO 900 BONACORD AVE. 273 MICHAEL BLVD.
