In bis most recent work, Kolie- nyk, 59, who follows the mini- nialist tradition, used powdered graphite on paper te examine one of man's meet primal instinctgmark-making. The symbol «x' is the centre of bis extensive investigation in which more than 600 prelimin- ary sketches were made from placing the symbol in a square. Leonard, renowned as a realiat painter and minimal theoriat, uses a new medium - stone- carving -- in bis lateet artwork, as he moves from realieni te abstraction. Leonard, 49 is represented in numereus collections, including the National Gallery Of Canada. Kolienyk is aise represented in many collections, inicluding the Art Gallery of Ontario. Beth artists were elected te the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts for their contribution te, the visual arts in Canada. The artista will conduct a teur of their exhfibition on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. Loca artists m Durham Artfest The second annual Durham Artfeet will be held Sept. 17 te Oct. 2 in downtewn Oshawa. Vacant downtown stores and office spaces will be used as art galleries. Galleries will be open from noon te 6 p.m., Tuesdays te Sundays. Local artiBs Steven Frank, Ed Hotson, Ian Kavanagh, Darlene Lazdins, Jay McCarten, Mary-Ellen McQuay, Sean McQuay and Ruth Read will bo among 33 other visual artists from Durham Region exhibiting worl<s in photography, painting, drawing, printmakcing' and sculpture.
