The Durhami Northumnberland chapter of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) intends to contact ail local candi- dates seeking election on Oct. 25 to determnine their views on health care. Candidates' positions on van- ous health care topics will then be used to help RNAO mexnbers and the general public mâke.an «mnformed choic» on election day, said Susan Uranowski chair of the chapter's politicaI action comnmittee. "WMat we're doing is Iobbying ail candidates within Durhamn Region and asking thein what their party's stand is on health care,» said Uranowski. We're not supporting any group. We just want to know their views," she said. Among the questions the RNAO will pose te, candidates are ones deaingwith the follow- ing concerna, %Uranowski said. They include: * universality -- making ealth care available te aIl Canadians; * accessibility -- services where people need theni; *comprehensive -- ahl necess- ary services provided; * portable -- services available anywhere across Canada; * publicly funded -- paid for through the tax system. In addition, candidates will alse be pressed for their feelings on charging deterrant or user fées, Uranowski said. «Many candidates are talking user fées which have proven net te be effective in the past,» she said. Uranowslci said the RNAO and its parent erganization, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), are wornied about the future of health care in Canada. «There is a growing concern because transfer paynments have been cut. Many hospitals are having financial problems," she said.
