The George Gilcrest House 306 Gilbert Street West WHITBY, Ontario REASONS FOR DESIGNATION 0F 306 GILBERT STREET WEST. WH-ITBY HIQBOR George Gilcrest built the home at 306 Gilbert Street duning the par of 1876. The 20-ft X 20-fL home has had numerous occupants since ts construction, most notably the Emmett and Oke farnilies. ln addition, from 1950 to 1959 it was rented b y the Whitby detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. The OPP put in an oil fumace <1950), constructed a garage (1952> and an addition to the rear of the home in 1953. Over the years of the home transferring ownership, the home has undergone some restoration and rnnovations. A replica side porch was added in 1988. During the constrction of the porch, the date 1843 was incorporated into the barge board under the front eaves, however, evidence clearly indicates the construction of the home te be 1876. ARCHITECTURAL The home displays a good representation of rnodest housing for the period around 1876. The basic storey and a haIt. rough cast torm, with ts gable end te mhe street, was popular for inexpensive heusing for several decades. Wth the plain roughcast surface, it relied on the placement of epenings te define its proportions, and is enlivened by slightiy pedimented lintels on the front bays. Restoration has added the verandah, barge board, bracketed door hood and door surrounds. The house aIse has important streetscape value by coniiibuing te a row of later gabled fronted houses.
