Whety Free Press, VWeeosday, November 10, 1993, Page1 New treatment is denta breakthrough By Mark Reesor A new treatînent which kilsa the bacteria that causes cavities is the biggest breakthrough in dentistyni 10 years acrding te Why dentist Jb>. Steven Miliman. The treatment, called 'chlor- zomn therapy,' was developed at the University of Toronte and is currently available only in Canada. A chemical called chiorliexi- dine, the active ingredient, ia applied, in the form of a varnish, te a patient's teeth, kiling the strep. mutans bacteria which causes cavities. The treatments, which cost $75 and take about a half hour te 45 minutes to perform, are effective for anywhere from three montha te two years, depending on how many bacteria the patient has. The nuniber of bacteria a per- son hias, which is determined through a $25 test before the treatment, determines if the patient la at a low, medium or high riak of getting cavities. me treatment is of greatest benerit te medium- and hiqrh-risk patients, says Dr. Michelle Lxys, another of the dentiste at Dundas-Green Dental Centre. A bacteria count la done agan on a medium-risk patient six montha after they have the treat- ment, sys Lanys. «If it's (remained) down, we would juat do normal dentistry, but if it's up, we would do another application." Some 20 people have already had the treatment at Dundas- Green, which i. one of the first dental practices in the area te get chlorzion therapy. Là anys says tests have shown the therapy "lias proven te be highly effective i really redue- ing the amount of bacteria and cavities.» <It'. the type of thig that. if 'our. not i contact with the bacteria again, the level should pretty weil remain the same," adds Miliman, who notes the niost common way of transmit- ting the strep. mutana bacteria is from mother te child. "A lot of people don't realize that cavities are contagious because the bacteria i. conitagi- Oua.» He says if a person isn't -rei- fected with the bacteria, '¶you could be cavity-free for a long period of time. «Without those bacteria, it doesn't matter how xnuch siuar you paýck ite your mouth, yoiïre not going to get cavities again.» DR. MICHELLE LANYS <Ieft) and assistant Joanna Gawlik apply a special antibacterlal treatment to Grace MconaId, an emptoyee at the clinlo. The treatment kilis bacteria whlcfl causes cavities.
