Whitby Fre . eWitdy. February 16. 1994, Pope 13 New club combines work with fun. '3Er 'onnor Foundd n 921 in 9Oakland Cal., the Soroptimiat Intr national of the Americae now has an Oshawa/Whitby chapter. The. Oshawawhitby charter- ing ceremony for the club of srofiessional women was held on The election of executive offi- cers will b. held ini June. With a memberahip of 23 (in- cluding doctors consultants, real estate aents, Lankers and edu- cators), t e club ains at 'lhelping the community," s3ays Joan McKnight, one o f the mnembers. "The cIub's main goal is to work i the community while raîsiing*the standard of women. Really, it combines work and fun togethor."# lthough there was previously a Soptimist club in the Osh- awa/Whtby area, the club did not last -- for reasons unlcnown, according to current members. But the Soroptimist club of Peterborough decided to try and launch another club i tins area. McKnight, who previously "tried not to b. part of women's clubs -- rather, clubs that focused on the community " likes the idea of the Soroptimist club, as "it ties in both aspects." Although there are no un- mediate plans for the club to further expand, they have many pîans for the community. "Until our full-fledged ,club is formed," says Mcûiiht, "we will be putting on career days ini the achools, so woînen will be able to talk about their careers." The aspect of the club McKnight enjoys the most is "the sense of community and spiritua- lt; everyone is very supportive." The Soroptimist club meets every second Thursday, and spe- cjalized committees meet once a month. Despite the name, says McKCntht, the Soroptimist club is "not related to t he Optimist Club, although the naines are very similar." 666-024 *s nsuaeln accept ed Se atientsapinimenD avilabefsr pléEmege cals cepe (durîng fficehours Gauthier to perfiorm Bourbon Gauthier, a country music artist with a style that includes blues, rock and cajun, will efr at l'Amicale on Saturday, March 5. ickets, $16 for adulte and $12 for stizdents are available at l'Amicale l~e French Com- munity <ë.ntre of Durhamn, at 707 Simca.
