The U6 héliogravure prints by Baldus are from te olection of the Art Gallery cf Ontario. Baldus (1813-c.1890) achieved great prominence during his if.- time but relatively little is known about bis lif. Originally trained as a painter, ho turned to photography in the late 1840a. In 1851, as a member cf Société Héliographique, he was commissioneaDyo>' ne govern- ment to document many cf the endangered architectural struc- tures cf Franoe's histo:rical past. He also photographed new railway ines. The views in the 26 prints were photographed in the 1850s, but were net published as helio- gavures unil Baldus issued them as a net of 46 prints in 1869-70.
