The teamn tallied 35 goals and allowed only eight goals in five gaines. Friday night Whitby faced Sunderland and won 8-2. Rachel Stewart popped in three goals, Tara Henry two. Karen McWilliams had a goal and two assists, Kathryn Penry a goal and an assist and iley Miller a goal. At noon on Saturday, Whitby met Mariposa and blanked them 5-0. Single goals went to Jade Blight, Henry, Miller, Michelle Leni and Stewart. Stewart and Miller eaeh had two assiste. Whitby then defeated Pickering 8-2. The teurnament started Friday with a gaine versus Pickering. Mm Vanderlip started the scoring quickly notching her first goal il seconds into the game. Whitby skated quickly to a 3-0 firet period lçad and coasted home with a 6-3 win. The Uine of Vanderlip, Erin Carroll and Natasha Carter was virtually unstoppable, accounting for ail of Whitby's scoring. Vanderlip scored three and set Up the other three, Carter scored two and assisted on two and Carrol set up four and scored one. The second game of the tournanient was much more strongy contested as Ennismore jumped out to a 2-0 lead. That was as many goals as goalie Samantha Sheppard would allow, as she played superbly the rest of the way, turning aside many good scoring efforts by Ennismore. Kara Easton, playing a strong defensive gaine, contributed offensively as well, scoring Whitby's first goal and assisting on the tying goal by Michelle Theriault. Carrol then took over and scored three consecutive goals for a natural hat trick to, keep the lead. Erica Giles scored the final goal te put the gaine out of reach and finish the scoing in a 6-3 win. Whitby's third gaine was against their nemesis froin Ajax. In a close contest, Ajax opened the scoring but Whitby quickly tied the score. Whitby then took the lead 3-1 on goals by Vanderlip and Carter, only to have Ajax tie the gaine bate in the second period and then score the winner on a screen shot with three minutes left in the gaine. The 4-3 loss set up a Sunday semi-final between the saine two clubs. Early Sunday morning Whitby and Ajax took the ice to decide who was the better club to progress te the final. In their preious five meetings, the tearns each had single one goal wins and three ties. The gaine was te underline the competitiveness of both clubs, ending with 49 seconds left in the fourth sudden-death overtime period. Play started quickly as strong skating and passing were constantly blunted by solid defense.T I> Witby defense of Lara Huéel, Anne Henderson, Kara Easton and Megan Neilly played superbly and coupled with solid goaltending by cal-up Tamara Wiesiolek, held Ajax scoreless for the first two-thirds of the gaine while forging a 3-0 lead on goals by Vanderlip (two) and Carroll on set-ups by Henderson (two) and Carter (two). Jennifer Cotton was solid on offence and defence. Ajax slowly clawed their way back, scoring with less than two minutes left te send the gaine inte overtime. The two tearns battled back and forth in heart-stopping action for 19 more minutes of sudden death play until Vanderlip fired the winner, scorinjg her third goal for her second 'hat-trick of the tournament. This assured Whitby of the silver medal. After playing four overtime periods, it was difficuit for Whitby to get ready for the final against Sunderland two hours later. Whitby, however, was Up to the challenge, scoring first and holding Sunderland scoreless until the last minute of the first period. I the second, period, Sunderland stretched out to a 4-1 lead before Vanderlip scored two to set up an exciting final few minutes. Whitby pressed relentlessly and caused Sunderland to take four penalties in the last two minutes and allow Wihitby te play four on two in the Sunderland zone. Carter and Vanderlip both hit poste but could not score and the gaine ended 4-3 in Sunderlands favour. Vanderlip had an excellent series, scoring 10 goals and assisting on six of the other 12 goals scored by Witby. Carter was next best, scoring four and assisting on six while being named Whitby's most valuable p layer in the final.
