Technical requirements are being expanded to make R-2000 homes environmentally friendly - inside and out. R-2000 specifications already cover virtually every aspect of construction, making R-2000 bouses cleaner, quieter, Iess expensive to maintain and heat, and heaithier to live in. Now, more recycled and reused niaterial will be used during construction, and toxicity and contaminants inside the home will be reduced by the kind of carpeting, paints, varnishes, adhesives and coatings that may be used. Carpeting must flot cover more than 50 per cent of the floor area, including the basement, unless it is free of glue, used without an underpad or with a low-toxicity underpad. Natural fibre carpets of wool or cotton are not restricted if there is no underpad. Liquid coatings and flooring adhesives must be water-based, made for use indoors or meet standards set by Environment Canada. itchen cabinets and bathron vanities made from manufactured wood produets must use formaldehyde-free particle board, meet international standards for particip board or have ail exposed surffices sealed with a water-based sealer.
