Whitby Free Press, Wednesdlay, ApnI ,13,1994, Page 15 A HOME DESIGN AND IMPROVEMENT FEATURE____ R-2000 program goes green The R-2000 Home Program, a successful partnership of industry and government that sets standards for the design, construction and use of technology in homes in Canada, is going green. Technical requirements are being expanded to make R-2000 homes environmentally friendly - inside and out. R-2000 specifications already cover virtually every aspect of construction, making R-2000 bouses cleaner, quieter, Iess expensive to maintain and heat, and heaithier to live in. Now, more recycled and reused niaterial will be used during construction, and toxicity and contaminants inside the home will be reduced by the kind of carpeting, paints, varnishes, adhesives and coatings that may be used. Carpeting must flot cover more than 50 per cent of the floor area, including the basement, unless it is free of glue, used without an underpad or with a low-toxicity underpad. Natural fibre carpets of wool or cotton are not restricted if there is no underpad. Liquid coatings and flooring adhesives must be water-based, made for use indoors or meet standards set by Environment Canada. itchen cabinets and bathron vanities made from manufactured wood produets must use formaldehyde-free particle board, meet international standards for particip board or have ail exposed surffices sealed with a water-based sealer. To lessen the impact of the house on the environment, buildings must use recycled material for at least one application in the bouse. Ifthe builder chooses to work with insulation, fibreglass insulation must be at least 50 per cent recycled glass, cellulose insulation must he made from 100 per cent recycled paper and mineral fibre insulation must be at least 50 per cent recycled. Roofing must be made from recycled metal, paper, wood fibres, plastic or rubber, and sheathing and dirwll must have a bigh degree of recycled materiaL. Fibreboard must be made from recycled newsprint and wood fibres, waferboard must be manufactured from fast-growing trees sucb as aspen, siding must be made from factory and sawmill waste, and drywall must contain rycle gypsum and newsprint. Stude and trini must be made fiVom sawmnill cutofis and waste and be free of formaldehyde. Frank Gianone, chair of the steering committee of the R-2000 Home Program in Ontarlo and aiepeident construction for Frm Building Group, says P.,2000 homnes are the most energy-efficient and comfortable bouses in the world, and the new technical requirements will make them the most environmentally- frienffly. "There's growing awareness of environmental issues and these new technical requirements address those concerne," be says. "They look at the impact of the bouse on the environinent and al« the environniental conditions in the bouse. '»According to the latest figures, at least one in four a CRT YSESO AN4A Canadians bas an allergy or sensitivity to chemicals of some kcind and ites suspected that some of this could be alleviated by paying more attention to the way bouses are built and the materials used." In Ontario, the R-2000 Home Prograrn je sponsored by the Ontario Home Builderw Association, Ontario Hydro, Ontario Natural Cas Assocation, the Ontario Ministry of Envirornent and Energy and Natural Resources Canada.
