In this column Id like to give you five ideas on what to do with your refunci, and five ways to reduce your 1994 income tax. 1Py down personal debtu (especially credit card balances). Even though niortgage rates are at a reasnlelevel, lump sum paLyments go directly on the principal and could reduce the amortization by a nuinher of years. 3. If you don't have one, start an emergency reserve fund. Open up a money mnarket mutual fund or put it into a short- terni deposit s0 you aren't tempted te spend it on non- emergency items. 4. Put the refund money into an RRSP for 1994 now. You will ensure some tax deductions for 1994 and y ou won't be running around looking for money at the end of February in 1995. 5. Invest the money fer a medium- or long-term goal. The best time te start tax planning for 1994 is now. Maybe y ou didn't notice, but the government keeps pecking away at littie tax deductiens. Some of these investments can be very risky, so spend some time te find out what is available and whether or not it matches your goals and objectives.
