Whitby Free Press, Wednesday, Apn 21', 1994, Page 25 Bihl 21 gives rights to m--obile home tenants To the Editor:- I amn writing as president of the Subway Mobile Homes Tenante Association wiîth refer- ence to a letter from Tom Doucette regarding Bill 21 ('An NDP farce,' The Free Press, April 20). Mr. Doucette referred to the problems that residents of Subway Mobile Park have suffered for years trying to force the landowner to maintain the property. We have had problems with the internai roads water leakage and hydro. We have found it very MPP MMN "I opposed cuts when they were made"' To the ]Editor- Re: Go train petition I want to thank The Free Press for coverage of the GO train petition campalgn. More people have sent in reply cards on this issue than at any other time. Many have picked up petitions and returned them, filled with signatures. Hopefully, they will keep corning in and we will be able to suptain a successful campaign on the issue of extending GO train services. When I read the partisan coniments in a recent letter to the editor ('An NDP farce,' The Free ,Press, April 20), 1 was quite dipappointed. Surely, any con munity legder should be participating in the campaign for the good of our whole community. I would invite the writer of that letter to get out of his armchair and join me in championing' this priority transportation service within our community. The decision to curb GO train services was one made with the approval of the GO Transit board, upon which flot a single New Democrat sits. I opposed the cuts at the time they were made. To the west of Toronto, where the sanie cuts occurred, not a single Liberal or- Tory MPP has takerx the saine public action that I have. MY actions regarding GO Transit have been consistent and thorough. My colleagLies and I have met with niinistry officiais and Iobbied fiercely for the extension of service te Oshawa. On this matter, I have been on public record in the legisiature over the past year. I have most certainly not been sulent on the issue. I have continued to put the interests of my comxnunity ahead of any partisan boosterisi. It is my judgment that my constituency would be better frustrating to deal with the landowner because we do not have the saine rights as other tenants to make the owner keep the property in a reasonable state of repair. Mr. Doucette also mentioned that Bill 21 (the Landlease Axnendxnent Act) will help solve these probleins by giving the 23,000 tenants of mobile home parks and landlease communities across Ontario similar rights te tenants in townhouses and apartments. However, we do not share Mr. Doucette's opini'on of Drummond Whîte's involvement with Bill 21. Mr. White and hie staff have worked closely with the tenants association over the past year conernng Bill 21 and other landiordtenant problems. Indeed, on April 20 Mr. White, along with New Demnocrat Larry OYConnor from Durham-York, both presented petitions in the legisiature in support of Bill 21 which is so important te the well-being of the tenants of mobile homes. It is flot the New Democrats, it is only, the Progressive Conservatives who are blocking the private member's bill froin heing debated in the legisiature for the third readinir. Most of us who ive in mobile home parka own our units and many are low-incoîne earners, seniors and disabled. We need this type of affordable housing. For many of us our life svnsare invested in our units. Weeare left at the whim of the landiord with littie or no protection in law. I arn in full support of Bill 21 and 1 arn asking people who believe in fair play and equality for ail to join with un in writing Mr. Hlardes, leader of the Progressive Conservatives (Logis- lative building, room 116, QueWns Park, Toronto, Ont.
