With a second-place finish in the triple juxnp and fifth in the 100m, hie was selected as the Athlete of the Meet. Teammate, Woodfley was first in both senior triple jump and 100m and second in 110nm hurdles. Roxanne Woodley of Anderson took first place in both the junior girls' l100mn and 80m hurdies. Tony Branch of Anderson plaeed second in the junior 110m hurdies. Seleets dlaim ti*tie The Whitby major atomn select teamn, sponsored by Hardco Contracting and Excavating, finished t he 1993-1994 hockey season by capturing the North York League championship. Whitby won the titi. by defeating Humherview Sharks in two straight; gaines. In the first gaineon April 27, Mike iàske was flying as hoe scored three goal for the hat trick in a 4-1 win. Ryan Meaney had the other goal with assista g oin aR a Mondes, Sean lmes, Mke Kobrynovich, Kyle Ruttan and David Bosco. In the final gaine Whitby came out strong once afan and scored two quick goals by Holmes and Ruttan. Sharks came back with one goal in the firet, but wero continually stopped by great goaltending by Adam Rinaldi in the first two perioda. In the third period Michael Thornton took over in goal for Rinaldi and went on to stop 15 shots as Sharks attacked. Ruttan scored the insurance goal for Whitby as they won 3-1 for the championship. Mendes and Meaney (two) assisted on the goals. The team ended, the season with 58 wins, five ties and 12 busses, with six tournament, wins and two consolation champion- ships. The teamn earned the reputation as the team te beat wherever they went. Other teain members include Brian Leni, Chris Michaud, Nicholas Michie, Ryan Robb, Stefan Hass, Gary Kitamura, Ryan Harris and Mike Atalos. The coaching staff is made up of Geoif Michie, Ray Michaud, Evan iàske and manager Bob Kobrynovich. W'. Fairman Public School won goid at the Canada East wrestling cham- pionships in Pembroke over the weekend. Martin, competing as a mem- ber of the Durham X-L's againet wrestlers froni Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and P rince Edward Island, was first in the 48-kilogram ciass for bantains (aged 18 and 14). Marin had previously won his class at a competition in Hagers- ville. Neil Reading of Palmerston Public Schooi was second in the kids (aged il and 12) class at the Canada East competitin.He had previously won bronze at the provincial championehipe in the 40.8kg chas. Malcolm MacLea of Palmer- ston, who was third at both the Hagersviiie and provincial meets also was third at the Canada East event in kids. Pat Rossi of Fairman second in Hagrville, was third in ban- tam 51kg ciass in Pembroke. X-L's won both the kids and bantam team championships. Novices edged in Shamrock final The Whitby major novice select hockey team, sponsored by Crawfs Sport, finished their season as finaliste in the Shaxnrock teurnanient. The firet gaine was a 2-1 win over Cedar Hill1. Goal-scorers were Andrew Hewson and Brian Chard, assisted by Matt Annis, Adam Death and Patrick Lang. The second gaine was a fast-paced contest against Vaughan, Whitby 2-1. Annis and B.J. Bowles scored for Whitby with assiste fromn Hewson, Paul Vanderlip, Lee Waddington and Jeff Hass. In the third gamne of the tournamnent, Whitby skated toaa 4-1 victory over Agincourt Canadians. Annis lead the scoring with two goals with Bowles and Chard each one. Assista for this gamne were by Death, Hewson, Waddington, Vanderlip, JefWels and Lang. The championiMp gaine was against Forest City in an evenly-matched contest that Whitby bast 3-2. The first Whitby goal was by Death unassisted and the second by Bowies assisted by ilss and Vanderlip. The team's record for the season was 45 wins, 17 lasses and eight basses, winning tournaments and finaliste three others. They were second in their division in North York beague.
