cruisng info r cont est Some years ago, the Brooklin Sprîng Fair board decided to try and corne up with an event for-the asphait parking area next to Luther Vipond MemorialArena. TI 1991, Ray Hodson organized a car show for that location. In the few years since, the event has grown so, popular that Hodonhad to, reluctantly, turn away cars -- 100 is the Iiit on the spaoe available. «We had a fantastic turnout last year,» says Hodson, noting that there were entrants from as fer as Burlington and Napne. There are 17 categories for contestants in this years 'Cruisin' Day': beat pre-1950 Ford, best post-1950 Ford, best pre-19 50 GM, best "ot-1950 GM, best ChrysIer produ ebet pre-1950 antique car, best pre1950 antique truck,% beat hardtop customized rod, bet convertible custornized rod, best post- 1950 truck, best classic convert- ible, best classic hardtop, best pait stock, best paint custom, special interest, director'a choice and sponsor's choice. Those categories are altered slightly from last year's event, and the sponsor's choice is a new category. «We wanted a change,» says Hodson, who began Coin-Op car washes in Oshawa in 1965 (he sold two) and who currently operates one he built in 1980. There are trophies for the winner in each category and ribbons for second-place finishers. The entry fee is $7, which includes the car, driver and a passenger. Some of the more outstanding entries lest year included a 1927 Pierce-Arrow owned by a Brooklin resident. Itwas just like brand spanking new," saXs Hodson, addng that such cars «are few and far between. Lest year's show also included a 1938 Packard, entered by the Burlington resident. «I always had a interest in old cars," says Hodson, who owns a 1941 Buick and 1968 Mercury Couger, which he shows at fairs and events. So the job of staging the show was handed to Hodson -- a task he enjoys., Hodson says the fair is a perfect occasion for such a show: «People can enJoy the show and then go and enjoy the fair." Like ail other organizers of outdoor events at the fair, he's hoping for dry weather. Owners "dont lke teling their cars out in the rain." With mod weather such as that on the fair Sunday last ea,«We're lookin f'Ïorward to a good show," he sale. The show wîll behield from il a.rn. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5.
